Personal Values Analysis

Throughout the last week I have been able to learn how personal values effect the counseling relationship in various ways. One thing that I was able to remind myself of is that everyone brings a unique perspective to the table. Every client has their own set of values in the same way that every counselor does. One thing I have been able to learn as to not shy away from those personal values in a professional setting but to try and fully understand them for the benefit of myself and especially of the client.

Through careful introspection, I took the time to really think about what holds value to me in my life and as a counselor. In my log you will be able to see that I tried to make sure I noticed when a situation where my values were challenged

While I am working to obtain my Master's, I also have a job as a baseball coach where I deal with a lot of different personalities from different backgrounds from various places around the world. On Wednesday May 2nd I imposed some of my values to the team. I spoke to them about the idea that preparation is key to success. I told the team that I believe you should work as hard as you can outside of the game. In practice, in workouts, in the classroom, everywhere you should work hard so that when it does come time to perform you are prepared and ready to do what you have trained so hard to be able to …show more content…
There were multiple times where I found that in a team setting my views were challenged. Another instance of myself having to defend my values was when talking to a small group of players on my team. A player was describing a play in a previous game where he believed he could have done more to help the time out by being safe on a particular play. He spoke to the fact that to do so he would have most likely hurt the opposing player at which point I told him he made the right decision. He then went on to tell me that with a team that he respected less he would not have had the internal conflict to hurt a player to allow himself to be safe. At that point I felt the team values were challenged. Concordia Baseball, being one of the values that I stated before means a couple different things. First it means always displaying sportsmanship and second it means to always play hard to win. This was probably one of the biggest challenges to my values I felt through the week. It is still bothering me now knowing that one of the players feels this way but looking back I think taking the time to more thoroughly understand his values would help me to better deal with the situation.

In the past week and a half, I have been able to evaluate some of my values but largely my biggest values were not challenged. Through this process of thinking of not only my values but other people's values, I was able to see how much understanding

There were many decisions that I had to make in order to positively impact the team. One of these was kicking a teammate of the team due to an incident at a party on the weekend. I could have either voted to not kick him off which would make the football team look bad and show other players they can get away with the same act. Or kick him off showing the school the football team takes pride in being a good example around the school and show the underclassmen that we do not put up with what this player partook in. Furthermore, we did kick the player off the team in turn looking at the bigger picture of the team as a whole and not my own personal…

Through the interval referral, I developed preconceived notion of the type of family I was working with, however you should never make a judgement on individuals on what you read. The ethical implications of a counselor expressing their values to a client Young, Scott, Craig, and Cashwell (2016) explain that it is often difficult for a person to exist and work in a manner that is value-neutral. According to Young, Scott, Craig, and Cashwell, 2016, value-neutral is a term in psychotherapy used to explain the goal of not changing the value of a client to match that of a professional, by assuming that the values of the professional are preferable. Although counselors often have their set of values, just like other people have, it is important that they understand that the goal of counseling is to ensure that a client examines his/her value systems and beliefs and make decisions accordingly. According to ACA code of ethics (2014), Section A.4.b., explains that counselors should refrain from imposing their values, behaviors, and beliefs.…
