When I came from India, I got a job as a personal support worker. I used to work in Retirement homes, sometimes in community settings. As per my schedule one day I went to community home to take care of my client. She opened the door for me when I pressed the call bell. She was a 90 years old woman who was living alone. She was walking with a walker and she was able to do activities of daily living with supervision. I tried to help her to do daily routines, but she preferred to do everything by herself. After her breakfast she asked me to bring her medicines. She was doubtful about one of her tablets. To clarify this doubt, she suddenly called her family doctor and they discussed what she wants to know about her tablets. She called her family doctor when she had doubts about her tablets. They talked around 15minutes and the doctor cleared her all doubts. I could see it was like a friendly talk and they were laughing, asking open-ended questions in between the talk. While in India, doctors are much respected and people cannot call them directly. It indicates a high power distance. In this situation, people should visit their doctors to clarify their doubts instead of calling them and they can ask open-ended questions to some extent. Therefore, Canada is low power distance country when compared with India.
In addition to that, this story also showing uncertainty avoidance when her son brought groceries according to the weather forecast. The reason why he brought groceries is, he did not want to drive his car on a windy or snow flurries days as he is conscious about safety and security measures. Whereas in India, people never bother about weather forecast and they travel everywhere without a look at weather forecast, which means people are more tolerant of risks. So, uncertainty avoidance is higher in Canada than India.
