In the “Working with Others” section of the self-assessment, I learned that my preferred conflict-handling style is competing. The self-assessment defined competing, as a desire to satisfy ones interest, regardless of the impact on the other party (Prentice Hall’s Self-Assessment Library, 2009). I have always known that I am a competitive person, but never view new that I could possibly be overlooking the interests of my co-workers. In the future, I would like to work on how I handle conflict by making sure that I listen to each team member’s idea and not letting a different opinion from my own upset me. The Self-Determination Theory and Actualization of Human Potential article is about the concept of human potential. The article refers to early theorist such as Maslow (1943) and Rogers (1951) which introduced the concept of highest human satisfaction through reaching one’s height of potential. This concept explores complexities beyond conditioning. Self-actualization is the process through which an individual achieves his/her full potential. Abraham Maslow was the psychologist that brought the concept into prominence through his hierarchy of needs. He theorized that the hierarchy followed this order: Basic psychological needs, safety needs, love and belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization. Maslow assumed that the lower levels had to be satisfied or relatively satisfied before a higher level could become a motivator and reach the final goal (Ivtzan, Gardner, Bernard, Sekhon, & Hart, 2013). Edward L. Deci, Richard M. Ryan, and Frederic Guay further analyze the concept in their work Self-Determination Theory and Actualization of Human Potential.…

The concept originates from and organismic meta-theory meaning humans are not born empty to be filled, but are actively in pursuit of actualization. Humans are genetically setup to thrive in their environment in the best way possible if given the correct tools. The Self Determination Theory is used to explain actualization and defines it as normal human potentials. The theory assumes that humans want to be proactive to move toward refinement and integration in self-functioning, (Deci, Ryan, & Guay, 2013).…

Self-Actualization is the tendency for humans to strive to fulfill their fullest potential. While on the other hand, the Self-Determination Theory states that humans have three types of autonomous behaviors which include intrinsically motivated behaviors, extrinsically motivated behaviors, and emotion-motivated behaviors. The theory also puts forth that with these behaviors comes two different ways that our basic psychological needs are met and have been divided into those which include our needs from learned desires as well as our needs that are required for necessities, health and our well-being (Deci & Ryan, 2000). Everyone has different desires and ultimately different requirements when it comes to their basic needs and views for their well-being.…
