Personal Statement: Why I Want To Become A Teacher

Improved Essays
All of my life, I have loved to nurture individuals younger than myself. Growing up, with my best friends and brother, all whom were much younger than myself, I would beg them to play school so I could pretend to be a teacher. Begrudgingly, they would indulge me in my wish for a short while until they realized I wanted to make them do actual math problems. Since then, the joy for imparting knowledge on others has never diminished, but has intensified as I have matured into a young adult. I believe that a great teacher can help mold a generation. Eventually, I want to be that teacher.
In my early teen years, I began to fervently seek what the Lord intended to do with my future. I tossed up the idea of being a pastry chef, for I love to cook

The same summer as the prophecy, I received training in Wilson reading program to become a tutor through a program called the Augustine Project. The Augustine Project trains volunteers in a multisensory approach then, after seventy hours of training, they must tutor a child who qualifies for free or reduced lunch and has a low reading level for sixty hours free of charge. When tutoring commenced with my first grade student, his reading ability was far below a typical kindergarten level. He was incredibly shy, but was willing to learn and do what I asked him to do through the multisensory approach. Though at times he found the task difficult, he persevered. Throughout one school year, I helped him accomplish raising his reading ability to well above a second grade level. The joy I received in helping my student improve his skills in reading, writing, and spelling is unparalleled to any other I have ever …show more content…
Last March, I had the opportunity to go on a mission trip to India. While there, almost everyday we went to a different school to share about the Lord. The eagerness to learn in schools in India was inspiring. To them, the opportunity to complete school is a luxury. Many children have to stop going after a few years because of the need to help care for younger siblings or having to help provide for the family. After I complete my degree in elementary education, I would like to go to a school either in Bangalore or in a surrounding village to teach and be a missionary. India is a very spiritual land, overrun by darkness. I want to bring the light of the Lord through the education of the next generation.
Many events have lead up to my desire to be a teacher. At Lee, I hope to glean the knowledge of how to be an effective teacher. Jesus has called me to teach the younger grades in India. I hope that the Lord blesses my time here and learn to become a great

While living in New York, I volunteered for DREAM, an organization based in Harlem that provides after-school programs to area students. For two-and-a-half years, I spent two hours per week working with local children on their math, reading, and writing skills. While there, I developed an especially strong relationship with a student named Gio. When I first met him, Gio lacked confidence in his own abilities. Though he also needed to work on his academics, I knew that increasing his self-confidence would do wonders for his school work.…

I was not able to read until the second grade and I did not discover I was dyslexic until the ninth grade. Although I was not a quick learner, my fourth grade English teacher, Mrs. Lawson, showed me unconditional patience and love, she is the reason I am so passionate about English today. Sadly, Mrs. Lawson along with her family of five died in 2009, during only her second year of being a teacher. Through only a year and a half of teaching, Mrs. Lawson was able to leave a legacy of students to have a desire to pass on the love of English.…

The first time a child reads is an important milestone in his or her life. Literacy is, after all, the key to success. In “Superman and Me,” Sherman Alexie relays both his ease at teaching himself to read and his difficulty in his literacy not being accepted by those around him. Susan Madera faced hardship in speaking English correctly due to her second language, neighborhood, yet she was accepted as an English writer, as she narrates in “One Voice.” Although I learned to read at a young age like Sherman Alexie and attended private grammar school like Susan Madera, I wasn’t subjected to any backlash or hardship in speaking, so my literacy journey was much easier that theirs.…

While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…
