Why I Teach: During my senior year, the high school I attended offered its first computer class. I eagerly enrolled and learned BASIC on an Apple IIe. My first program was a game similar to
Boggle's word search. I meticulously drew up my project plan, spent hours in my room at night working through the logic of my program, carefully entered my code, and, remarkably, it worked! I shared it with my classmates, who then asked me to show them how to bring their own visions to life. It was exhilarating to share their journey with them! I discovered then that a teacher is not what wanted to be; it is who I am.

I teach my students determination and perseverance to see the project through to the end because only then will they know what success feels like. I teach my students to be independent and critical thinkers because anyone can follow the steps in the book, but they can achieve great things by writing their own. I teach my students to question and to have the courage to disagree and offer a better way of doing that task because I can still learn, too.
How I Teach: I believe it is my job to expose students to challenging ideas, values, and perspectives as well as the specific course content. I have developed alternative teaching methodologies which address the needs of learners with differing levels of preparation and learning styles to help students achieve success. I have created and implemented numerous small group activities specifically tailored to focus on critical portions of the course material. With technology and programming, there may be several ways of achieving the same outcome. The emphasis on group goals forces students to deal with a diversity of opinions and concepts as they try to
