Robbins Leadership Theory

Trust and ethics are very important in leadership; this fact cannot be disputed. Keeping this in mind, I also believe that weather in a management position or not anyone can be a leader and display leadership qualities. “Any human being willing to mature spiritually and emotionally into an individual willing to take ownership of the situation around him and care for others can be said to be a leader” (Fischer 2009). Mentoring is a good example of this. A mentor is someone that with experience that teaches and trains someone with less experience (Robbins & Judge 2009).
The best thing that a mentor can do is to train his or her protégé to become independent from the mentor and lead themselves. Robbins (2009) describe this a self-leadership. According

P. and Judge, T. A. (2009) defined “leadership as the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals” (p. 385). There are two theories that can be used to differentiate and categorize people are leaders and non-leaders trait theories of leadership and behavior theories of leadership. Robbins (2009) claimed that trait theories are theories that “consider personal qualities and characteristics that differentiate leaders from nonleaders” (p. 387). These theories look for characteristics such as the “big five” to predict leadership effectiveness.
The behavioral Theories are defined by Robbins (2009) as “Theories proposing that specific behaviors differentiate leaders from nonleaders” (p.389). According to Robbins (2009) the difference between the two is that trait theories is under the philosophy that leaders are born and behavior theories are under the philosophy that leaders can be trained because leadership is defined by behavior instead of trait.
Power
If leadership is the ability to influence than a way to measure the effectiveness of a leader is by how much power they possess. Power is defined as the “capacity that A has to influence the behavior of B so that B act in accordance with A’s wishes” (Robbins 2009 p. 451). There are several types of power coercive, reward, legitimate, expert, and referent. According the Robbins (2009) the following are defined

Ent, M. R., Baumeister, R.F. and Vonasch, A. J. (2012) concluded that
Power appears to make people goal-focused and more willing to approach goals. Goals that are consistent with the leadership role, such as high effort and effective performance may therefore be facilitated – but less useful and admirable goals including self-indulgence and pleasure-seeking, may also be facilitated.
When power is misused it can create a lot of problems and cause mistrust among co-workers and employees. Fischer (2009) claimed that it is important that we not use our power outside of our authority granted by God and the Law.
Conclusion
The more effective the leader the more power that leader has. To determine if a leader is good or bad we must observe the way that leader uses his or her power. The way we can ensure that we use our power within the given authority from God and to continue encourage the idea of covenant in the work place is to follow the wisdom written in Proverbs 3:5-7 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.” By doing this we will humble ourselves before the power and authority of God and follow his

Trait theory set out to distinguish successful leaders from unsuccessful ones based on the leaders' behavioural and personality characteristics, and to also identify what distinguishes leaders from followers. Today, it is widely regarded as an outdated assumption and although the traits identified by trait theory are characteristics which some people may naturally possess, it is now thought they can be learned and implemented by leaders who do not necessarily naturally possess the said characteristics and that leaders derive their authority from experience. Basic traits that an effective leader must possess are; self-awareness, self-control, motivation and…

It is certain that human beings learn from their mistakes, therefore it becomes a challenge to move forward from the present. This gives the leader a chance to effectively taking charge without revisiting instants where leadership was not at its optimal. As discussed by Janie B. Butts in Ethics in Organizations and Leadership (2008) and stated earlier, trust is an important factor in which leaders and members depend on to sustain the organization. Entrusting others with tasks and responsibilities is, in some cases, a risk that leaders have to accept as it is a way to develop the trust between…

The proper possession and wielding of power is essential to one’s ability to influence individuals, and as such serve as a model leader. Those who we look up to often recognize this, and utilize power to promote positivity and guide individuals to great success. However, occasionally leaders will take this use of power too far, resulting in the negative connotations that surround power today. Don Carty, a former CEO of American Airlines provides an excellent example of the proper use, but also the abuse of power in leadership. During an economic downturn the CEO utilized his knowledge of the industry, and the power of his position, to convince employees of the airline to take pay cuts so they could remain in work and the company could avoid…

The key concept of a leadership is how they use their power to influence another person. Some people think leaders are born with a trait that innately makes them leaders, while others theorize that it is a characteristic of an individual, but we have learned that leaders are a product of their development and life experiences. Leaders are concerned with understanding people’s beliefs and gaining their commitment. They function without focusing on the opinions of others, which allows them to think of new ideas and motivate others to develop these…

It is essential to first take a look at the definition of leadership that Northouse (2013) has identified as practices is which one impacts and influences groups of people in order to accomplish a “common goal” (Sharp, 2015). In module one, Leadership Primer, Sharp explains that in order to be an effective leader, one has to be able to “reach out and engage other people as followers” (2015). This becomes a common goal amongst leaders; however, various approaches and theories base an individual’s leadership ability on different processes. The trait approach explains leadership as assigned and inborn characteristics and argues that all leaders share the same traits such as intelligence and extraversion (Northouse, 2013). On the other hand, the skills approach explains leadership in terms of emergent skills that anyone can develop in order to become an effective leader (Northouse, 2013).…
