Therefore, I am certain, I qualify for the Ferguson scholarship because I have volunteer experience at my university’s tutoring center (Rutgers Learning Center) where I have volunteered as a tutor for a summer session. Throughout my time as a volunteer, I have interacted with and helped students from math and science courses that have trouble with the pace of the summer course. The end result being that, most of the students passed their courses with good knowledge of the subject and I further developed my leadership skills while making new friends. More importantly, I believe this experience of serving my community helped me better understand the nature of being a doctor serving his patients to the best of his abilities. The Ferguson scholarship is possible because of volunteers that raise funds, hence, the recipient of this scholarship should demonstrate an importance of serving his or her community. Consequently, I believe, I demonstrate the importance to serve one’s community; hence, I qualify for this

No matter how many times one reads a piece of literature, one will have a different perspective of any writing in comparison to other readers and the author themself. To get an enhanced understanding of the book 419, I noted Will Ferguson’s perspectives of his novel and his motives for writing the novel by watching his interview with Steve Paikin. I know truly appreciate not only the quality, but the quantity of the work and planning Ferguson put into this project. As solely a reader of the novel, we fail to acknowledge the author’s reasons for specific character details and plotlines. After watching his interview, readers understand his motives behind certain choices he made to enhance the authenticity of the novel.…

The generation I am growing up in, is full of a lot of issues but what bothers me the most is the fact that we are never told the full truth. I’m grow up where it’s wrong for an officer to do his job, or defend him or herself so they can see their family at the end of the day. The news broadcasters almost never give us the 100% full truth. They give us want people want to see for ratings. All that does is fuel the fire in debates leading to the people bringing up even more unnecessary actions.…

This organization would offer mentoring programs to kids in order to give them the confidence and skills they need to succeed in today’s world. Mentors will also be able to do volunteer work with their mentees in order to teach the importance of giving back. The Michael Schodowski Marauder Scholarship will assist me in this goal by helping me fund my college education which will give me the skills and leadership experience that I will need to run such an…

The presentation starts by talking about the event in Ferguson. However the subject is not really explained and just jumps to state the differences between black and white people. I feel it could go more into detail why the differences between black and white people affected the way people feel about the shooting of the black male in Ferguson. I am from a minority group (Hispanic) and I have both black and white friends. To me, it seems my white friends do not necessarily realize the extend of the difference between them and other minorities, not only black people.…

According to the U.S Census, there are around 655,000 current African American high school seniors. Yet, when reading the statistics of the Ron Brown scholarship applicant pool, there were only 4,000 students who applied. These 4,000 merely makeup .006 percent of the black seniors in this country, and they shine a light on an area that the Ron Brown Scholar program needs to address. Today, the modern education system is tainted with bureaucratic and oligarchical tendencies that prevents students of color, and low socioeconomic backgrounds from excelling in this highly competitive field.…

Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. An example of our discoveries during research was results showing that minorities, especially African Americans, are less likely to pursue living…

In many universities today, you will find an African Studies Department. However, this has not always been the case. African Americans have fought to have equal rights when it came to education. In the early 1930’s, Carter G. Woodson challenged the idea of “Mis-Education” of the black race. Supported by prominent leaders at the time such as W. E. B. Dubois, Woodson argues on the “education system’s failure to present present authentic Negro History in schools and the bitter knowledge that there was a scarcity of literature available for such a purpose”(Woodson 1).…
