This past summer I was chosen to be a small group leader for a mission trip to Yucatan, Mexico with my church youth group. As a small group leader I had many responsibilities for this mission trip. Being a leader showed me that I had to be a good example and that I should lead by example as well. When I had to wake up first and get ready for the day, I couldn’t be complaining or be cranky because then my kids would feel the same way and act the same way as I did. To be completely honest it was one of the hardest things to do there because the weather was so unforgiving and when we would run out of water while walking around the time seemed even more endless. I had to die to myself more and more everyday to better serve my small group and the people of Yucatan. During the course of the mission field my small group would always ask me questions and add comments when we were doing VBS or just practicing skits which kind of gave me a sense of encouragement because it showed that the kids looked at me as someone that knows the information that they do not. When it was small group times and a time of discussion my one small group member named Bryce said “I’m really thankful that you were my leader for my first ever mission trip”. As I asked why he explained how I was always setting examples for him and how I would always be the first one to do something and that I would never complain about what we had to do.
