Personal Statement: School Boundaries And Motivation

Improved Essays
Only sixteen of forty assets apply to me: family boundaries, school boundaries, achievement motivation, school engagement, homework, reading for pleasure, honesty, responsibility, restraint, planning and decision making, interpersonal competence, cultural competence, resistance skills, peaceful conflict resolution, personal power, and self-esteem. I one hundred percent agree they have affected my development in terms of behavior. I lived in New York before moving to California. It is not as dreamy and friendly as California. If I would have had the support and encouragement of my family and friends, I would have been in twelve grade by now probably college. I was given the opportunity to skip a grade, but I wanted to fit in and be accepted

Moving schools away from all of my friends should’ve been an appalling experience, surprisingly, it was a blessing in disguise. I went to Agnes Baptist Elementary from kindergarten to 5th grade and I had friends that I've known since I was 3. I loved it there and knew the school like the back of my hand. Everything was superior, like most good things, though there were times where they weren’t, I was harassed by a bully almost everyday, my grades were getting inadequate, and my mom didn’t want me to be a sad, disconsolate 7th grader at a new junior high. In the result, I moved and I went to Savage Middle School, a school that had 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.…

Changing schools was the turning point in my life. Coming to a new school gave me a chance to meet new people who shared a similiar interests with me and find a place to fit in. For as long as I could remember I had trouble connecting with people. My parents both came to America to create a better life for their children but unfortunately they could not speak English. They also did not allow me to interact with kids of different races because they were fearful it would corrupt me.…

In the article, “Helping Students Find their Place in the World”, by Danielle Allen divides education into liberal arts and vocational education, then discusses each’s importance. She claims that humans are born incomplete and need education to fulfill themselves. For humans, there are four main reasons for education: for breadwinning work, for political work, for self expression, and for relationships with others. When it comes to what someone educates him- or herself to do, there are two schools of thought. There is the utilitarian method that Plato thought would have been better, where when people are born they are given a vocational education to get a job and that job only so no one is redundant or useless.…

I started my educational goals just like every other student. I graduated from high school with the ideal that I would accomplish my goals within a short amount of time. I would become rich and live happily ever after. I graduate top of my class and assumed that I would go straight to college to purse my dreams. Although I did not have a defined idea of what I wanted to do in life, I always wanted to help people.…

Baylor Personal Statement I could hear conversation coming from inside the room. Confused and eager, I positioned myself behind the door. Why was no one excited? The faint murmur of the next sentence cut straight through my heart, “Due to the lack of oxygen during your son’s birth, there is a high probability of him developing disorders during his childhood.” This couldn’t be happening to my baby brother.…

As an eighth grader, I had no choice but to balance out my school work, making sure to do all the chores, and taking care of my three younger siblings at home by myself. My parents would be up in the hospital taking care of my now passed grandmother, who had cancer, while I, being the oldest child in the family, had to stay home alone to take care of my younger siblings. At first it was a difficult task for my 12-year old self to handle. While I was doing my homework or studying, I would have to stop what I was doing and help my siblings on their homework. Another scenario would be me cleaning up the house, even though there were homework waiting for me on the table.…

Growing up, I would describe my background being placed in the middle class spectrum. I was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida. My parents were migrants from Haiti coming from families that were not impoverished but also not well off. My father came here young in the 80s, being able to adjust and learn how to survive and live in this country. Everything that he has and own was built from the ground up.…

There are boundaries that keep society safe, like the painted lines on the freeway, and then there are boundaries that truly confine society, like those currently employed in many school systems, that are meant to be broken. Bridging the gap between two different subject matters or connecting concepts with different mediums are the very ideals that made my high school experience so enriching. By having the privilege to conduct research and collaborate with others, my personal boundaries of thought were greatly expanded. Interdisciplinary education is what allowed me to excel and is what I hope will continue to push me throughout my education at University of Washington.…

To be honest, I hate school with a passion, yet I love learning as much as living. As a child, schooling created a feeling of loneliness and sadness that echoed throughout my life, even now. I didn’t meet the standard levels for literacy and was separated from my classmates in elementary school for special reading and writing classes. Also the lack of freedom to say and move the way I wished to, and the rebellion that stemmed out of me in middle school due to these limitations. Finally, the conforming in high school to appease my mother, friends that drove me over the edge, yet even now I feel the same bull-crap in college.…

Today my parents asked me how school went. I wanted to respond with "Horrible, I never want to go back", but it's only one week since I've started the 10th grade. Therefore, I responded with the same "fine" I have been responding with since 7th grade. To be honest, I sometimes make it seem worse than it is. I could actually try to be positive, smile while I walk down the halls, laugh at unamusing jokes, seem like I actually want to be there with everyone else.…

Educators have always struggled with the differing teaching and instruction methodologies used in the world of educational instruction. The argument can be heard often from many education professionals as to what the “best” teaching method increases student understanding and knowledge.
