“We have an obligation and a responsibility to be investing in our students and our schools” (Foster). This statement is one of the many famous political expressions made by President Barack Obama; this one in particular was one from a speech in April 2011. This assertion made by our President creates a refection of my first and failed experience in Expository Writing at Roger Williams. My teacher was not invested in my education at all. When my struggles in class first began in the fall semester of 2015, I relayed them to my professor and he suggested to go to the writing center for help. Following his advice I met with a tutor; they were not able to help me because I did not have anything written yet and they could not help me start. I felt …show more content…
In my CORE science class we had to write three essays throughout the semester they were sort of daunting to at first because they were supposed to be two pages single spaced on any scientific topic that I want to write on. While writing the first essay I was unsure what to write about and afraid I was having the problem that I had a year ago. Taking a breath, I start to go on recordable science databases and science magazines. I looking for something that was recent and interesting. Eventually, I found a lot of articles on Laron Syndrome. With an immense amount of research I studied my topic and after learning all I can I began to write. I felt really comfortable with my topic and was totally prepared to write. To start off I considered the rhetorical situation, the audience was my teacher so I decide to treat the audience as anyone so I can do more in depth with vocabulary and the genre is clearly scientific non-fiction. My use of rhetorical appeals are based of the genre being scientific non-fiction I knew I would have to use more logos than ethos or pathos. Keeping that in mind I wrote using P.I.E. format, fact or a quote follow by a description followed by an explanation. I did this throughout the essay and I got four out of five on the …show more content…
For essay I was writing about Roger William’s Letter to the Town of Providence so I did not need any research, just the document. Never the less I still did some research but other than that I jumped right into the rhetorical appeals and decided for this I should use logos but also ethos because considering the rhetorical situation I am writing a more of review or editorial. For this I got compliments for doing research and an A grade on the paper. The last paper this class helped me write was a short review of a Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra for my Aesthetics class. Knowing my teacher was my audience; I used logos to describe the terminology in music, ethos to describe how the music was controversial and pathos to express my emotions towards the music and concert. For this essay I another A grade. In conclusion, this class has been drastically different and immensely helpful. This year I have got so many good grades on my papers, I am more confident when I write. This class had shown me so much, I know my writing better and my study habits better. Overall, I am just ready to move on the writing course but I am not afraid to

After reading Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer,” I revisited my directed self-placement essay while asking myself the many questions Bunn recommends to ask oneself when “reading like a writer.” In doing so, I was able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses I possess as a writer, and therefore know where I need to grow the most as a writer. One of my greatest strengths as a writer is knowing my audience and composing my writing accordingly. I am aware that when my audience is a teacher who will be reading and grading plenty of the same essays to include original ideas and arguments; it gets boring reading the same type of paper and ideas over and over. Along with my well thought out ideas and arguments, I also credit myself with the ability of using appropriate evidence from credible sources that support my claims.…

As an incoming freshman in August of 2015 taking Rhetoric 105, I not only learned how to take apart papers, summarize, paraphrase, analyze and construct passages, but overall to be a great thinker. There are many ways that a person can tell you that works to become a better thinker, but it starts within you. While writing papers this fall semester, I learned that my writing became better when I a. understood what was being asked of me via the criteria, b. allowed myself to make mistakes in order to understand what I was and wasn 't doing correctly, c. I started to question myself, not in a way of was the work too hard, but in the sense of what the assignment and the thesis I am creating is asking. At this stage, you have to be completely real…

During ENG 1020, we completed many assignments focusing on the three main goals of this course, teach students about different styles of rhetorical situation, learn about the different genres of reading, research, and writing, and to teach students to develop analyses and arguments using research-based content, effective organizations, and appropriate expression and mechanics. Throughout this course, I have learned how to search and specifically find appropriate sources using the CRAAP test, identify proper characteristics of a rhetorical piece, and be able to reflect on my own writing by completing multiple drafts. These experiences allowed me to improve my persuasion techniques, my ability to find reliable information, and editing skills.…

In this rhetorical analysis, I will be analyzing and comparing two essays, Richard Straub’s Responding— Really Responding— to Other Students’ Writing and Donald M. Murray’s Writing Before Writing, by exploring how effective the authors of the two works. I am analyzing and comparing use purpose, audience, persona, and context to convey what they are arguing through their usage of rhetorical appeals. To convey their ideas to their intended audience, both authors, Straub and Murray, appealed to ethos— credibility, pathos— emotion, and logos— logic and/ reasoning throughout their essays.…

When he handed out the test I immediately looked at the essay question and had a glimmer of hope. It was something we had just recently covered in class, and I remembered it perfectly. Then came the multiple choice questions. Although I remembered the information of most of these, there were some that I just couldn’t recall. There were five questions like that, and it just so happened that I couldn’t miss more than five to raise my grade.…

These past five essays have shown me that I have the ambition and grit to work hard until the end when composing an essay. Good writing is not just correct grammar, spelling, and being mechanically sound. Good writing has to precisely present a clear topic and successfully address such topic to the chosen audience. Using rhetorical tools like ethos, pathos, logos, can improve the effectiveness of an argument significantly. One of the most challenging part of writing during this class was using specific tools to reflect on ideologies and influence an audience.…

Course Reflection The eight weeks over which English 111 lasted were weeks of learning and enlightenment. Since our first attempt at writing an essay in elementary to middle school, we are told the main components to writing an essay is the ‘beginning’, ‘middle’, and ‘end.’ All of which holds true today, but as we move from one grade to the next, the standards for a ‘good’ essay changes for the better. Rhetorical strategies, devices, and appeals also known as rhetoric, is what we learn in high school (Stotsky 10). The continuation of the expanding knowledge is what makes us alter our writing strategies, from the material taught to us in our adolescent years of elementary school and every year thereafter. It is in high school that we are taught to analyze and dissect the author, as well as the author’s work ceaselessly.…

This class was beneficial to my future as a social worker. I was able to learn about different therapies I could potentially use when working with clients. When we were first assigned this paper I was a bit conflicted on what my theory was going to be since I felt that all therapies were important. But as we learned a little bit more in depth about how each of them worked I was able to relate to certain ones. The main therapies I’ll be using as a guide for my personal theory paper are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person-Centered, and Family/Systems Therapy.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

Prior to becoming a student at New England College, I worked in the business world for more than 30 years and did a tremendous amount of writing; emails, presentations, business reviews and personnel assessments, to name a few. Each of these different types of writing required correct grammar, spelling, and a requisite knowledge of the subject matter. Therefore, going into this course, I felt well prepared for the critical thinking that was required for the class. However, my goal for this course was to grow as a writer.…

In this self-reflection of my experience, I am going to be very candid in my feelings and experience about this professional writing class. I feel like this class was not up to my expectations and I did not learn anything that will make me a better writer. Yea, a few concepts became clearer, but I did not learn anything that will make a significant difference in my writing style. I was kind of let down, because I expected to learn a lot about the art of writing and more ways to express my thought in a clearer matter.…

While earning my undergraduate degree, I had a formative internship as a visit monitor at a court-appointed family visitation center. I ensured that children could interact with their parent in a way that was safe, appropriate, and healthy for the child’s physical and emotional health. The families that I monitored had often endured traumatic experiences, particularly related to abuse, neglect, addiction, and mental illness. I witnessed the resiliency and risk factors that impacted these children, who ranged in age from infancy to adolescence. At the same time, I was struck by the fact that many of these children were not receiving the intervention services they likely needed to prevent negative outcomes, such as depression and anxiety, from…

During the initial stage of the video production, we discussed as a group on the social issue to focus on. After we finalized the social issue I participated in the discussion to form our story plot by suggested some scenes and shooting angles from other public service announcement videos, dramas and movies that left an impact on me as an audience.…
