I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forgive my science teacher. She taught me to work harder than I thought I could. She spent countless hours after school reiterating the basics of chemistry when I wasn’t understanding. She was always there to help me learn. She said she would be there to see me graduate. Losing Mrs. Sommervold was the most significant challenges I’ve experienced in my seventeen years. On September 16, 2016, Fort Collins High School lost one of our own. Sommervold taught chemistry and biology courses at Fort Collins High School. She was a first-year teacher when I had her sophomore year for chemistry. Mrs. Sommervold was an incredibly smart woman, obtaining degrees from CU Boulder, University of Northern Colorado, and Western Governors University. She had the answer to every science related question, to this day it still confuses me why a woman of such intelligence could forget to wear a seatbelt. I’ve taken and excelled in several AP classes through my high school career. Advanced English classes, college level math courses, honors anatomy. But for some reason chemistry was never my strongest subject. Mrs. Sommervold recognized this, and made it her duty to ensure I understood the material. We spent hours together before class, and after school, reviewing the textbook, something many other teachers would’ve never committed to. She was an excellent teacher, with a patient, kind heart. The night Mrs. Summervold and her husband were killed was a tragedy. It was a horrible, unnecessary accident with a devastating conclusion. It’s heartbreaking to think that taking 30 seconds to buckle their seatbelts before departing could’ve saved both their
