Physician patient relationship is crucial in medicine. That’s what we have been taught through the years in medical school. I found this advice totally true during one of my 4th year clerkship rotations, when we had to interview patients for at least 30 minuets and during the interview we had to attentively listen to their narratives and ask questions to explore all the details and reach to a diagnosis. I remember one patient who was referred to psychiatry clinic to screen for depression after acute coronary syndrome he had couple months back. We interviewed the patient regarding the referral reason and concentrated to his cardiac status and how that affected his function but we missed what the patient was concerning him …show more content…
I believe that psychiatric patients are most needy for help for many reasons.
Most of the psychiatric disorders can affect patient’s daily function and the onset usually in early 20s and 30s of age where most of the life big decisions should be made. Secondly, patients need to worry not only about their illness but how the community including family members and friends will perceive that illness were stigma play an awful role. On the other hand, the outcome of most of psychiatric disorders is remarkable and it’s evolving every year. As a psychiatrist, we can provide patients with spectrum of medical treatment and if that is not helpful or not available we can just talk with them.
Neuroscience is one of the least understandable system is human body and there is big gap between what we know now and what we should know to improve the care of patient with psychiatric disorders. Since I took research subject in my recent years of medical school and was the leader of our research project, I knew that research is something I want do for the rest of my future career. My passion for research guided me to take an extracurricular courses and workshops to understand the basics of a clinical research.
