In my life, I have been blessed to be healthy, loved, and cared for. I do not consider myself to be in a position to say I have overcome adversity when there are many people that truly have. Nevertheless, I have overcome myself and realized who I am. Growing up, I have been surrounded by two cultures: Puerto Rican and American, my mother being Puerto Rican and my father being Scottish-Irish-American. Yet, I felt ashamed of my Hispanic culture, mostly because people never considered me as Puerto Rican by my physical appearance.…

I am interested in teaching at Breakthrough as a Teaching Fellow this summer because Breakthrough is where I discovered my passion. Working with the students as a volunteer last summer, and as a teacher during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school-year program, was something I looked forward to every day as I got to know each of our special students. I discovered that working with kids, who often say exactly what they are thinking and choose to find joy and positivity in all aspects of life, was something I absolutely love and something that makes me truly happy. It is difficult to convey the joy and comfort I find in teaching, and how much I value the opportunity to change a child's life for the better by offering the support they may not have…

When I am older I want to look back on my life with pride and satisfaction. This means more than earning a job in the biomedical field or raising a family with someone who shares the same values as me, although I do hope to do both. I also want to know that I worked hard and did not take an easy route or way out. I want to have taken challenges instead of shying away from opportunities I came upon. I want to be able to proudly look back on moments where, perhaps, I could have been deceptive or gotten away with something, but I instead maintained my integrity.…
