My biological father was in and out of my life since I was born, he was not there for my mother when she found out she was pregnant, or after I was born. He only showed up when he didn’t have to take responsibility for me, like when I was with my grandparents or by sometimes remembering to send me a birthday card with my misspelled name and twenty dollars once a year. He always seemed to think that by saying he would see me more often if he was given the chance to and handing me money that I wouldn’t think anything of his absence. Truth be known, I always knew he never grew up himself and would never be the man that the four children he produced would need. I was okay with this thought process for two reasons: one being a had a mother that went through an unbearable amount of heartbreak having the father of her child not be involved in the life of her child and struggling to make it by. Then two, having the wonderful man that came into hers and my life that she married a year later. My step father had a choice when he decided to marry my mother, help love and raise the child he did not create or to simply not. I never had to ride the school bus since my grandmother worked at the elementary school and dropped me off every day until I drove myself. Spoiled is what a lot of people would call me, but I still to this day don’t think of myself that way, just very loved. I started working as soon as I was legally able to at a fast food restaurant and even before then by helping my dad detail cars. Independence and my own money was always something I enjoyed, while the minimum wage jobs were not, I couldn’t wait to graduate and really start making money. Money was always something talked about in my household, not having enough of it, spending too much of it, and working hard for it. My parents were my models for how I wanted to be as an adult, having their house paid off before it was finished built, newer cars, and getting to eat out every now and then as a family. To live affordably and still have fun as a middle class family is my goal as I have entered into the adult world. As I have learned having money, saving money, and paying bills is not something easily juggled especially as a mother and college student. But, my value of stability and financial independence keeps my head held high and my goals even
