Objects Of Life
Using objects is a helpful and effective way to tell a story. Having visual aids to support the story possibly attracts viewers ' attention, keeps the focus on the important parts of the story and makes it easier to follow and comprehend the story line. The objects I 'd select to illustrate my very own story include a tent and camping equipment, my passport, a toy plane, my suitcase, running shoes, my medals and lastly my wedding ring. The first set of objects – tent and camping equipment – represent my dearest childhood memories. Growing up in Europe, I spent countless trips into the mountains, hiking and camping. After struggling with being overweight my entire childhood and most of my youth, I had never imagined to learn to love running. When it first was an outlet for stress while my family transitioned into a new normal after my parents got a divorce in my teen years, it sparked an interest in a healthier lifestyle. The beat up running shoes show the struggle I have overcome, the pain I walked off after my family separated, and the work I put in to lose the weight until I felt comfortable in my own skin. Every single step counted and meant to much. The medals and certificates are a constant reminder of how far I have come and that there is absolutely nothing I can 't achieve if I set my mind to it. It can help to bait the listeners ' or viewers ' attention, and keep their focus and interest. Especially for visual learners, seeing a part of the story right in front on them, helps to comprehend better. Objects can convey a story differently. It 's a more effective way than using words or images alone as the viewer might feel a connection and feels a relation to the object. One great example would be learning about a historic event such as the Holocaust from text books versus walking through a Holocaust memorial such as the Dachau Holocaust Memorial in Munich, Germany or the United States Holocaust Memorial in Washington, DC. Reading about events, whether historic or personal is one thing. Seeing items that were critical to the story or event, such as the thin clothing WWII prisoners wore in the freezing cold, the small bunk beds they had to share, the little amounts of food they received and the scratches on the walls of the gas chamber tell a completely different story. It conveys the horrendous times people endured, the pain they felt, the fear they lived with in a way that we can only try to understand and comprehend.
