Motivation with Music

When I began teaching language arts, I thought, how in the world I would motivate middle school kids to be interested in learning to read and write better? I even went so far in my thinking to wonder if I could even stir a passion within them for at least some of the elements of this class. I began looking within myself and thinking of the things I was passionate about at their age and the one thing that kept coming to mind was music. Even this initial thought moved my heart. I took this idea and began to work with it. No one in any of the schools where I have taught used music (and very few do today), so I had to start from scratch. I knew that in order for my administration to buy into my ideas, I needed to show educational

The most obvious ones to me were in teaching types of literature and figures of speech. I decided to make this a Monday activity, to add energy and interest to my classes on a day that would benefit the most from it. I wanted to be sure to pick songs that fit my curriculum needs but I thought it was also important to use music of a variety of genres. I looked through my music collection initially and chose four songs. My plan was to use the first verse or two of each song, display the lyrics and play them while my students followed along. I made sure that I prepared my students to look for specific elements of literature and/or author’s purpose and after we listened to each song, I displayed the lyrics again and we discussed what they discovered. I thought it would be important to make sure to choose a song that was the first to play each week that would generate energy and enthusiasm and I made sure that genres of the four songs were varied. As this activity evolved, my students have submitted music to me ahead of time and, if appropriate, I often use them. Every Monday, there’s always at least one student that asks, “Are we doing Music Poetry today?” I have even had a handful of parents tell me that their kids have asked not to make appointments for them outside of school on Mondays so they will not miss this

This week, I have been focusing on the new song that my mentor gave me. This song is called Old Joe Clark. He told me that the song was written in the late 1800’s during the time that slaves were around. He said the name of the song has a interesting history. When I entered the education landscape, I was foreign to the ideas and the nature of those that saw themselves as something more than just a student. I never thought that those students that sat behind the deteriorating desks could educate themselves. Ergo, as I transferred from middle school to high school, I began to discover those students that were seen as insignificant if I wanted to succeed within what was previously taught to me as the “real world”. Yet, it was through those encounters with those strange and unique individuals where I was exposed to something pure. I remember the first time I was ever exposed to music as an educational structure for me to discover myself in.…

In today’s world it is common for most people to learn about history in a classroom, through a textbook and teacher. It seems silly or irrelevant to learn of the past in any other way than what we were prior taught in grade school and high school; However, there are other available sources to learn about history. One way that may not seem very familiar is through songs. Over the years many artists have produced songs referencing and telling the story of many historical events. From natural disasters to school shootings, there is probably a song that covers it.…

The screeching of my violin echoed off the wall as I struggled to play Mendelssohn's concerto in E minor. The double stops that were meant to flow in harmony came out in a jumbled mass of notes indistinguishable from the shriek of a dying cow. I whimpered as these terrible sounds emitted out of my violin, and threw my violin down in defeat. I slowly tilted my head towards the clock, a terrifying reminder that my addition was only 10 min away. I gathered up my music, and ambled away from the empty practice room to where my judge would listen to my audition.…

I was waiting for the match ahead of me to be over. I hear the loud whistle come from the match and I walk over to the head table to check in. Butterflies were flying around my stomach. The people at the table hand me my band and I jog over to my coach, and see my opponent, the state champ. I put my green band on as my coach says “All you have to do is win the match and we win the duel.”…

It still does.…

Why I Sing Chaeley Winkler I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t singing. Of course, I know there was time before I could speak or burble as infants do, so there must have existed a certain silence before sound, however the mere thought of being so silent—unable to reach out with voice or touch—disturbs me to no end. But these thoughts of a time before sound hadn’t quite crossed my mind until I began to question the finer, tinier oddities in my life. These questions emerged at around the age of seven, before they had manifested as inner thoughts.…

Todays society is surrounded by music in many different facets. The exposure comes from the growth and dependence on technology, which allows the movement of noise to any location. This knowledge and understanding of music is a skill that needs to be enriched in the children of today.
