Summary: The Trouble With Women In Computing

Journal Assignment The topic of interest I chose was gender in computer science, the diffences that are present and what are the current methods or practice available to tip the scale back into a balance. There were to main reason I choose this topic. The first is that computer is my field, I enjoy it and strive to learn every aspect of it. Second reason was that recently in the beginning of the fall semester Google started a new initiative to help women enter into the world of computer science. The initiative Google set in place was to designed to target girls of all ages trying to build their interest into computers. Taking a look at our university and my major (Information Assurance/Cyber Defense) there are only 5 females throughout the …show more content…
Since we are in a corporate cut throat world where you companies will do a anything to find a untapped resource an bleed that resource dry to get a “leg up” on their competitors women in computing is a great resource. Hence maybe why google is starting their initiative. The article I read was titled “The Trouble with ‘women in computing’: a critical examination of the deployment of research on the gender gap in computer science”. As the title describes that article establishes a known issue but doesn’t offer a solution or remedy to the problem we face. Instead it just present facts, such as trends about women in computing. One trend they established is that if the decline of women continues, than there will be now women studying or earning a degree in any form of computing by 2032. Looking at that statistic kind of scared me personally if I were to have a daughter I would want her to be in the computing field and be more than literate in it than the average consumer. Understanding how technology is being used and how it grows into the future, it will shape and control our lives to a major degree. That one will cause most people grief and cause them to leak out of the pipeline. Of the many reason that women face there four specific one that researchers studying this similar problem have concluded. The first is the image and stereoptypes associated with people in the computing field, how they can be perceived as a socially inadept or awkward. Second is that women see computing a male dominated arena where people don’t work with each other as much as the work with machines. Third is the lack of knowledge and understanding in the computer science field. Finally, the fourth the perception of computer jobs being unattractive, that there is no sex appeal. Out of the four-main reason presented only one of them is gender specific the other 3 can be viewed as gender neutral reason. Obviously the one bringing up computing is one specific to females. As for the rest men, can also perceive computing as un attractive, they can assume the stereotype that people in this field are awkward, and if they do not have a strong expertise or knowledge in the field than of course they
