During the summer of my freshman year in high school, I was diagnosed with a rare, malignant tumor that had been discovered inside my cranium, causing me to regularly visit MD Anderson Cancer Hospital, the largest cancer center in the world, for my treatments. From this ordeal, I found my calling for the field of healthcare policy/economics through my discussions with fellow patients and physicians about their experiences in dealing with insurance companies, evolving national health policy, and making decisions about which treatments would provide the highest value toward patient recovery. I was able to obtain an early glimpse of how a complex hospital system could save so many lives if logical thought was directed toward the utilization of…

As a new nurse working in the Emergency Department (ER) at a large teaching hospital I often had the opportunity to work triaging patients. Over the course of a couple of months one patient in particular came to the ER for pain related reasons multiple times and always left against medical advice. Finally, one day when the ER was slow I had a chance to triage this patient again, but this time was different. We sat and talked about all of the times he had been seen and left and I asked him why he always left AMA. The patient shared that he had been told by many doctors and social workers all about his illness and that he didn’t want surgery but that he just wanted to be comfortable.…

My partner and I were designated to help care for an elderly gentleman who recently had an ischemic stroke. Our resident was sleeping in a chair in the center room and neither of us wanted to wake him until it was time for breakfast. I asked one of the LPNs on the unit if she needed any help and she wanted us to take our residents vital signs before medication administration. We awakened him and walked him to his room to provide for privacy while we took his vital signs, which included taking blood pressure manually. This was a skill that I was not entirely confident in, but I knew it was crucial and something I needed to do; it was essential to put my patient first.…

It was a cold Saturday morning back in January, 2012. I remember tucking my scrubs into my socks in a failed effort to prevent them from getting soaked in the slush-coated parking lot. I was overwhelmed with excitement as I rushed through the hallway to make it to huddle. Not even a snowstorm the size of Texas, trapping us all at work for days, could dampen my mood that morning. It was only my second week on the job in the emergency room when not even a half hour into my shift I witnessed my first cardiac arrest.…
