Dogs have taught me so much about myself and they have opened my eyes to all the wonderful things and emotions they can make you feel. My dad has shown me how much dogs affect people’s lives in a positive manner. All his experiences with these magnificent creatures today influence why I want to become a veterinarian.
As a young boy, I was introduced to various animals which I basically grew up with. I had about three frisky dogs, two mature turtles, and a chatty parrot. I wasn’t quite fond of all of them yet. I feared them: dogs could bite, parrots can peck, turtles could snap at me, and bunnies, they’re just bunnies. Considering all these fears, my dad started sharing his experiences with animals, and it was very intriguing. He was a veterinarian in Cuba so he had many encounters with all the animals. He’d talk about how he would care for

It then led me to the world of Veterinary. I started watching YouTube videos about animals, where they were being rescued by animal lovers like myself, treated, cared for, and even adopted! Every video put a smile on my face and I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I kept researching all I could on dogs, cats, and all the animals I could think of. I went through pages and pages of information, taking it, all in. I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

My interest in the veterinary field began when I was six, when I arbitrarily announced I was going to be a veterinarian simply because I loved animals. Since I was quite young at the time, I was unaware what the job actually entailed. Consequently, I was somehow under the impression that if I watched National Geographic and Animal Planet, then I could immediately become a veterinarian upon graduating high school. I was undeterred when I realized just how much time that needed to be dedicated to school, and instead, it motivated me to take challenging classes in high school and to pursue a job at an animal hospital.…

Observing the surgeon, pleased by how the surgery had gone suture the skin around where the highly infected tail used to be I was once again reassured that veterinary medicine is the course I wish to study. l believe that being a vet is a diverse, challenging yet rewarding career, as there is no other career in the field of medicine that requires you to be an optician, surgeon, dentist and internist all in one day. Learning about animal conservation and the risks that the animals face in biology, has encouraged me as an individual to volunteer at a RSPCA charity shop assistant to raise money for vulnerable animals. My knowledge and animal handling skills have been broadened further due to my voluntary work at Hounslow urban farm, where I spend time alongside the vet…
