To be a Hokie means to be a part of a large family that is motivated to succeed. I thrive in supportive yet competitive atmospheres, which makes the friendly and high achieving Virginia Tech community well suited for me. Since I want to major in neuroscience, being a Hokie would mean having the opportunity to get a neuroscience degree, something that is not offered at many other universities. It would also mean getting to attend the first school of neuroscience within a university in the nation. Additionally, Hokies are lucky enough to receive guidance from academic advisors. I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. You would think after my grandpa being drafted to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Major League baseball team, and my dad getting a full ride to the University of Denver their skill would have rubbed off on me, but you would be wrong. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

Since I have moved to Blacksburg, Virginia Tech has truly been the only university that my eyes and ears have been open to. There is also the fact that the Hokie Birds scattered all through Main Street, and the amount of people in my school sporting Tech gear, is difficult to ignore. What attracted me to Virginia Tech first and foremost, was the sporting. The students around me always got excited for the games, and I personally enjoyed seeing Burnt orange and Chicago maroon all over Blacksburg. The way the students and the community came together during sports made me happy and I couldn’t help but feel pride in living in Blacksburg.…

I am a first-generation Latina student at The Ohio State University. Being from inner city Toledo, Ohio, I attended a public district where 80% of students received free or reduced lunch and the graduation rate was at an all time low of 49%. Through 25 different scholarships, I was able to attend OSU without any loans and truly believed I was on the right track to achieving the "American Dream". Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

As I reflect on my personal life I value life itself to the point I live each day not knowing what to expect the next day. Positivity is a major factor in all that I do to the point of trying to view all things in a positive way and leaving the negativity out the door.
