Personal Statement Of Purpose: A Career As A Nursing Assistant

I first became acquainted with the occupation of radiologic technology in high school when I had the opportunity to participate in job shadowing. I immediately chose radiologic technology as one of my first choices. I chose it because, like so many other students in my class, I had never experienced getting an x-ray or any other type of radiation modality growing up. I became interested in the science and anatomy aspect of radiation sciences and also was amazed at how a machine could produce images of bones, babies in the womb, arteries, etc. I traveled to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for my first job shadowing experience where I observed several barium studies of the upper gastrointestinal tract. I also observed x-ray, CT, and MRI. Afterwards …show more content…
I have been working there for almost four years. Since working there I have gained and improved upon many skills and also learned about a few skills I could improve on. My strengths include communication and people skills, problem-solving and planning, and leadership.
I have found that I have improved tremendously on communication and people skills. Being a CNA has helped me understand how to best communicate with patients and feel confident in interacting with people I don’t know. I am more confident talking to others one on one rather than in big groups and have strengths in the ability to listen as well as respond. Communication is very important in a health related field like radiologic technology because most patients are unaware of the events that take place in a procedure and it is important that they understand and are prepared for what is about to happen

My boss has put me in charge of training new employees and it displays that she is confident in my ability to teach others, am a good role model, and a great CNA. Although leadership is a great trait to have I prefer working alongside my coworkers while leading rather than tell others what to do directly. This skill is beneficial in radiologic technology because we work as a team. It is important to recognize when to step up and be a leader and when to follow. Areas of improvement include combating stress, inability to take criticism well, and trying to please everyone.
Stress management is an area in which I could improve. Since being in college I have learned time management which has helped tremendously but when I feel like too many things are happening at once I tend to shut down. It helps if I am able to make a list of tasks and tackle them one by one. This area could be further improved by immersing myself in stressful situations and learning how to deal with them
