When I enrolled in English 325, I was fairly certain I knew what the class was about. I believed that I would be writing papers using specific medical terminology. I quickly found that I was incorrect in my assumptions. It became apparent that the purpose of this particular course was to ensure that I would be able to effectively communicate in a variety of contexts while being able to affectively integrating knowledge and ideas in an orderly and logical manner.
At first glance, an official memo seemed to be a fairly simple task to undertake. It became abundantly clear that a simple document can sometimes be very difficult to write. It is easy to create a text that can convey a particular message when I am able to be wordy. It is another

I had to step out of my own world and into the culture of an ethnic group I thought I knew about. In order to achieve success with the given task, I had to effectively gather information from a variety of sources and then pass the information along in written form. As unassuming as the task sounds, I was also required to be creative and artistic with my work.
At one point I felt that I understood what was being asked of me, I once again found that I was incorrect in my thinking. The next task given to me was to write a scholarly research paper with an added twist. I then had to write a letter to an individual and provide the same information in simpler terms. This was not quite as mundane a task as it appeared; switching literacy levels can be a very difficult task. I found it can be very intimidating to write for a peer and then convey the same information to person who may not understand even the most basic of medical

I was able to grasp the idea that not everyone is just like me. There are those who will read the same thing I have and interpret it in a different manner. Others may not even be able to understand the words that are printed, let alone the ideas that might be presented.
Through the entire class I was forced to look at the world around me in a different perspective. Instead of becoming angry or defensive, I tried to understand why the information and material was important. I found that when I spoke to my coworkers about the class, they had different opinions regarding the information. This forced me to rethink some of the ideas that I had regarding the material that was offered in the class. I began to realize that there are many different perspectives of just one simple topic, and it is possible that all of them are right.
Once I had my epiphany, I became aware that the different skills introduced to me in this course will aid me becoming a better nurse. I am becoming aware that those around me may not view the world the same way I do. Now that I am aware of this, I can begin to adapt how I interact with those is different

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

College Prep Writing Advanced is the hardest class I have ever taken. I learned a lot over the course of this class, and I believe that my approach to writing has changed. I have learned that while writing it is easy to underthink, but it is easier to overthink. I also learned you cannot wait until the last minute to revise and edit essays. The first paper we wrote was the personal essay.…

Session 6 was conducted with our professor in her office. I stated last week in my reflection paper my concerns pertaining to our professional relationship and her well-being and our professor believed it would be beneficial to have us all meet to discuss the situation and the future of our dyads. However, the duration of this reflection will focus on my interpersonal interactions during the meeting along with incorporating the text to see if my responses align with the concepts stated in the book. The meeting began with our professor directing our attention as to why we were called in to meet.…

Before coming into this class I had never really formed an opinion on a lot of things regarding the criminal justice system, I simply never needed to. I didn’t have any prior knowledge about things like life without parole, or the emotional wellbeing of police officers. I will admit I was very naïve about a lot of it. This class has caused me to think about something that I may never have come in contact with otherwise. I have formed or changed a lot of opinions because of things discussed in class.…

In my Writing 104 class for this semester our first topic was a literacy memoir. I decided to write about a previous paper I had written about. I felt that it was easier and harder at times. It was easier because I had all the information that I needed to write the paper. All I had to do was write the paper in a different type of form, which was actually the hard part.…

I have focused this reflection assignment on an issue I was faced with during my third year placement in an acute hospital on a surgical ward. I felt very uneasy and awkward throughout the entire experience. I have focused on one issue that stood out the most for me and discussed this in detail. The issue was that my communication skills were ineffective due inexperience. I had not dealt with a patient experiencing a miscarriage until this placement which made me feel unprepared.…

However, after completing this project, I felt very accomplished because I was able to communicate my research findings through writing. I also realized that I can take advantage of this experience to communicate effectively to other members of society. For instance, I can use these writing skills to write a proper resume and cover letter that will highlight my qualifications. I can also notify other employees, supervisors and clients of my progress in a project through a progress report. I now have a much greater appreciation towards writing and I realized how writing can potentially change the way we communicate to one another in every aspect of…

    1. At the beginning of this course I identified my appearance as form of nonverbal communication that I could improve on, and my writing speed as a weakness. By providing a means to measure my progress, the SMART goals that I created for assignment one proved to be an effective tool. Although the initial goals provided a plan to improve my skills in these specific areas, I quickly recognized that my writing goals needed to evolve as I identified additional areas of weaknesses that were contributing to my slow writing speed.…

Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. Two significant learning points for me during this course was in module 3, using the I-language instead of you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…

Goal I The first goal of the program was to “Apply major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology to prepare for graduate study or careers in which psychological training is relevant”(). Two classes met this goal, Introduction to Psychology (PSY 111) taken at Anne Arundel Community College, and Introduction to Counseling Psychology (PSYC 432) taken at the University of Maryland University College. Introduction to Psychology was the first psychology course I took many years ago. It was the class I took because I had an empty slot on my schedule.…

Thinking outside the box only comes in handy when working on an art project, other than that, all students are required to stay on the same boat and move at the same pace. Learn the curriculum, go home. There was no space for diversity. So, to hear someone else actually think differently from myself was an eye opener. To think that the student in front of me who learns the same material had different beliefs was outstanding.…

Before my testing completion and review of project two (2) and the connect assessment, my understanding of myself was like wearing a blindfold. This past week, my eyes were truly opened to review how others may perceive not only their world within the workplace, but also see myself in mine. In this world, we spend much time trying to get to know others and sometimes forget to look within ourselves to affect the change needed to be the best we can be. It is very important to know who we are as individuals, but also important to understand what we can do to better communicate, listen and be more productive in the workplace and in our personal lives all the same. In Proverbs 16:32 (NIV) it states “Better to be a patient person than a warrior,…

Online questionnaires would be a better choice since people can type out their answers and store the information electronically. An online questionnaire would have graphics attached, check boxes, pull down menus, pop up menus, and help screens. Printed questionnaires would be good for those that do not have access to the internet and there are some people that are not receptive to completing questionnaires online. For any questionnaire, let us try to “Avoid open-ended questions. In most cases open-ended questions should be avoided due to variation in willingness and ability to respond in writing.”…
