Personal Statement: My Interest In Psychology

Decent Essays
My intended major is psychology. My interest in psychology is based in my own personal experiences and a strong desire to help others. As a product of a broken family whose mother was 15 when she gave birth to me, and whose father is an absent drug addict, I feel I am fatefully drawn to the study of the human mind and behavior. Battling through the emotions that come with living with lupus has also contributed to my interest in psychology. The awareness of these emotions and the ability to overcome has instilled in me great perspective which continues to help me pursue my goals. During my childhood, there was a constant feeling of instability which contributed to a lack of self-confidence. I felt feelings of insecurity that I would later learn …show more content…
This course reestablished my desire to learn the field of psychology, with coursework that included the texts of Erik Erikson, Sigmund Freud, and many others. This coursework further ignited in me a passion for psychology, and pushed me to become active in the school community. I became involved in the “Active Minds” club, which aims to change negative perceptions of mental health disorders. Participation in “Active Minds”, as well as several on-campus workshops has helped me become a productive member of the El Camino Community. The workshops I’ve taken advantage of have assisted me greatly and allowed me to help my peers in a way that is very rewarding. These workshops not only helped prepare me for my major, they are also integral to success in a college atmosphere. At the end of my second semester at El Camino I was awarded a scholar’s foundation scholarship, which I applied for using skills that I learned in a campus workshop. My professional goals are directly connected to my major. I plan on majoring in psychology, pursuing a graduates degree, and becoming a psychologist. The most effective way for me to influence others’ lives in a positive way is to be in direct contact with them, through therapy or research, which is my ultimate …show more content…
It felt like the longest, most painful flu. Not only did I feel incredibly weak physically, I was emotionally and mentally drained by not knowing why I was so sick. The devastating diagnosis of the autoimmune disease Lupus was heartbreaking. I felt beside myself, like the doctor was speaking to me inside of a dream. But I did not wake up. This was my new reality. It has been one of the biggest obstacles I have had to overcome in my life. My immediate treatment involved trying new medications that came with horrible side effects. In addition, this brought financial trouble by having to pay for medications and specialists that my family could barely afford. Maintaining a positive attitude was essential, and it created an atmosphere for me to be able to overcome my hardships. While studying at home and fighting through feelings of doubt, I maintained my grades and graduated with my class. Accepting my high school diploma was proof that I was capable of doing anything I put my mind to. I was determined to continue to overcome the challenges within myself and

Statement of Intent Dennis Hisamoto, Applicant for the School Psychology Program In third grade, my teacher suggested I be considered for special education. Fifteen years later, with the financial support from my scholarship, I became the first in my family to obtain a college degree. Some would call this phenomenon sweet irony. My undergraduate career to date has been a process of reacquainting myself with my strengths and values - and learning about the possibilities open to me - that culminated in choosing a firm goal: becoming a psychological counselor. Since making that decision, I have worked to develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to build a solid foundation for graduate-level training, and now seek a Master 's degree in counseling psychology in preparation for becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. While working toward my first bachelor 's, I had a lot of trouble deciding on a major because although my real interests were in Psychology, everyone I spoke to about it would respond slight demeaningly. I recall getting a lot of “what are…

It’s July 2014. My eyes are still heavy and hard to open from the anesthesia. As I slowly wake up and wait to hear the news, how little did I know that this news would change my life completely, for better and for worse. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, when I was nearly 14 years old. At the time, I didn’t quite understand what Crohn’s Disease even was, or how it would affect me on a day to day basis.…

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way” these are the words of Viktor Frankl that have fueled me within the last few years. After traumatically losing my leg in an accident I did not lose my positive attitude toward life or my desire to help others, I choose my own way to continue the path I was following before this tragedy struck. From the age of 18 as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to age 25 working as a Mental Health Associate (MHA) at a hospital, I chose to lead a life of service. My drive to assist others as a CNA would be the catalyst for me discovering that I wanted to be a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. It was through my work that I discovered the common ground of suffering, but also the resilience of the human spirit.…

Baylor Personal Statement I could hear conversation coming from inside the room. Confused and eager, I positioned myself behind the door. Why was no one excited? The faint murmur of the next sentence cut straight through my heart, “Due to the lack of oxygen during your son’s birth, there is a high probability of him developing disorders during his childhood.” This couldn’t be happening to my baby brother.…

Throughout my year at Barts and the London, I thought a lot about whether the course was right for me, and began considering other options.
