Racial Autobiography
Introduction
In my life, I wish that I could have known more about my father’s heritage. My father is still alive, but I do not talk to him. Knowing whom my father is, not only by his name, but the by type of person he is along with how he thinks, knowing this would help me understand who I am. Along with knowing whom my father is as a person and where her comes from, I would love to know how an employer looks at me as a student at Bethel University in comparison to a student with the same degree from a State school. My perspective of my specific life is one that I do not particularly understand without yearning for success, while wondering what I need to gain. I really want to know these specific things about myself to gain some sort of upper hand on how to better understand myself.

What is it like being in the home?
I grew up in a single parent home where my mom was my primary care provider until I was seventeen years old. I moved from home to home in many different areas of Minnesota. Most African American Families do not own their homes. Which means that they are renting or leasing their houses and or apartments. Most African Americans children especially those

They were surprised to see my doing good if not better than them academically even if financially they, themselves have had and will always have more money than me. My peers in school have helped me understand that there are things in life that only God can understand. For example, being African American has always allowed students at Bethel University understand that I am not just Black, but I am a student of color willing to risk it all for others to transform the culture within not only what white community but the Black on in a way that only a black person can, Possibly because one can really connect with it’s own race due to the cultural understanding within the historical

The racial identity framework that fits my identity would be Black Identity. First of all, because I identify myself Mexican. The other two racial identity development don’t describe the way I see myself and feel. As a matter of fact, when Dr. Reid mentioned the Black Identity, I was able to relate to it and actually see myself in stage 4 of internalization with secure attachments. Black Identity is a classic theory that apply to other group of colors.…

“Well, one, you’re African-American” are the words so carefully chosen by my high school theology teacher in describing why I should get into college. Not because of my intellect or my drive, but because of what I have no control over and more often than not, the future of my success would be determined by those judgements. As a young black girl, the product of a single-mother and financial instability, statistics show that the odds are against me, that my future will be the pinnacle of economic depravity and dependence. That will not be my future and only those with such shortsightedness are not able to see the passion and drive I possess, that I refuse to become another statistic.…

While it is uncomfortable to acknowledge that some of us have an unearned advantage in life thanks to things that we have no control over; such as gender, race, skin color, sexual orientation, accent and even wealth, it is important to discuss to better ourselves. As much as we, as individuals can continue to acknowledge and recognize our privilege it is practically impossible to discard or refrain from benefiting from the advantageous perks of the privileges. 0However, as we are able to see this invisible advantage many deny we can use our privilege to help and speak out and against the societal constructs. Lucky for me I have American, middle-class, straight and most of the time, white privilege. When I have a conversation with someone, with…

I was born on December 20th, 1996, in Vienna, Virginia. My incredible parents, Kevin and Melissa, are black and white respectively. They both grew up without a lot, but worked tirelessly, just as their parents had done before them, to ensure that my brother and I had everything that we needed, and most of what we wanted. Although we were well above middle class on a national scale, at our predominantly white all-boys private school filled with multi-millionaire families, we were outliers. That didn’t bother me until my freshman year of high school, when I noticed that the “cool” older kids, especially the black ones, all wore basketball shoes.…

Throughout my life I have had mixed experiences when it comes to race relations in America. Most of my experiences when it comes to race have been good. However, I have also had some negative experiences associated with race. One negative experience-e I have had as a result of my race happened when I came to college. I had been working at a Target back home and decided to transfer to a store closer to Cabrini.…

Another tragic memory that pumped some sense into my head about racial identity and ethnic disparities; was when my elder brother was arrested on the basis of being black. My brother was wrongfully arrested because a Caucasian officer expressed that he saw him rob someone. Upon arrival at the scene trying to understand what happened, that officer expressed in his words that “ nigger you know you robbed that store”. I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me because, I have always heard about situations like this. The officer made more remarks such as, “you niggers are always stealing”, “you niggers will always be shit”, and you are going to pay for this crime even if you did not do it.…

When I assert “I am white” it means that I have never had to question who I am as a person based on my race. I have never had to question the way I was treated just based upon the color of my skin. This calls to the social construction of race. I hardly ever have to question my race because I am white. Those of other races often fight internal battles where they question, “Is the reason I was just treated this way attributed to my race?”…

Being a white, heterosexual, female means I am privileged to do many things some people are not but also some things that can be frowned upon if I did them. Being a female already puts me below a male. Being a white female I can go anywhere I want and not have people watch what I am doing. I can walk into a store have the sales associate say hello to me and continue on with her day. I can also carry around bigger bills and not have anybody think anything less of me besides that I work my but off for that money.…

I never really thought too much about racism when growing up. Maybe that is due to my upbringing. I was raised in a small diverse country town where, for the most part, everyone got along. Not to say that there was no racism; it just was not seen very often. Some would call me lucky to have been so naïve in my microcosm.…

I have felt many pressures, race is such a big problem among black people but as community can get over the hump of being pressured into a few stereotypes. From my own personal experience being a young black man growing up in many places of black being the majority such as Detroit, Chicago, New York I felt an amazing amount of comfort around these areas. Once I move down to La Vernia Texas, being enrolled into an all white school with a lot of Mexicans and the only black people could only fit on a bench in a hallway that we called “The Black Bench” in high school, I attended La Vernia school district for 7 years from 4th grade all the way to 10th grade in high school. My first encounter with this whole move, and experience this new…
