Self Reflection In Interpersonal Communication

My Intrapersonal Self Reflected in Interpersonal Communication Everyday of our lives we use interpersonal communication to create, maintain, and end relationships. According to Beebe, Beebe, Redmond, Gerrinck, & Salen-Wiseman (2015) interpersonal communication is “a distinctive, transactional form of human communication involving mutual influence, usually for the purpose of managing relationships” (p. 4). Before engaging in interpersonal communication, we first have to develop a self concept. This self concept is later reflected in out interpersonal communication skills that we use when interacting with others. I believe I have a strong understanding of my self concept which is reflected when interacting with others. Although I believe in …show more content…
Cooley (1864-1929) proposed that “we learn who we are by interacting with others” (Witt & Hill, 2013, p.69). This is also referred to as looking-glass self. In relation to self concept, I believe I am athletic, intelligent, outgoing, a perfectionist, loyal, and was put on the earth to make a change along with countless other traits. These attributes I believe are created from interactions since I have been told I carry them therefore I believe I have them. Further these traits have changed throughout my life time based on who I am interacting with. For instance, only recently I have gained the trait of athletic. This trait was gained because I started working out and associating with people within the fitness industry. Further, I am sister, friend, daughter, niece, granddaughter, and cousin. These identifiers of self-concept are ones that I believe I have because of the roles I have within my family and …show more content…
Confronting is the first interpersonal communication skill I am hesitant to use. Ever since I was young I have tried to avoid confrontation. I believe this is due to the fact that I do not like my inconsistencies being pointed out. Therefore, I find no need to that to others. I have become a lot better at confronting people, but I still try to avoid it if possible. Further, I am extremely weak with setting goals, problem solving, and evaluating. As previously stated, I am good at creating goals for myself but, for others I am not. I find that when I help create goals for others and they end up not following them, I tend to get frustrated and quit altogether. I think this is due to me having the perfectionist trait and other’s goals have a lot of variables that are out of my control. I am working towards getting better at this by becoming a personal trainer. In this profession I will be setting goals for others and trying to maximize their chance of success. Finally, I am weak at summarizing. I think this in mainly due to the fact that I have not had to use it often. The NURS 204 lab is one of the first times I have actually used it. I know once I start nursing, summarizing will be a key

22 per cent of Canadian single mothers were poor in 2009 by the LICO-AT standard (Statistics Canada, 2011a). However the international LIM-AT standard is thought to be more accurate for calculating the number of unprivileged. Rather than estimating a pattern for spending on food, shelter and clothing for a family, the contemporary costs of these items are calculated and then compared with the family's income after adjustment, at half of the population median (Statistics Canada, 2015). By the LIM-AT standard, places lone parent families headed by a woman at 44.5 percent in 2012 (Statistics Canada, 2014) Divorced women experience income that is significantly lower than when they were married (Duffy, Mandell. 2001). The inability to work in an…

My first module entry consisted of Interpersonal Communication. I find this the most important because communication starts any conversation. I believe as a leader I have used interpersonal communication to my advantage but at other times it has been my biggest down fall. One of my drawbacks is that I do not self-monitor at times nor do perception check myself. This was evident during my time here in the group sessions.…

Being a child of divorced parents I would have to agree with the statement of communication being the main reason for the decline of the family unit in the United States. I was eight when my father and mother divorced, as I remember it was a long and bitter process. At the time I was too young to understand the causes of why this was happening, but many years later, after my parents became friends and I entered my adult years both my parents talked to me openly about the reasons for the divorce. Of course, there was more than one reason for the divorce, but the one thing I always remembered both my parents telling me was they stopped talking for the final few years, and neither was listening, the end result was the divorce. The irony of it…

The first few weeks of the semester really made me realize how terrible of a communicator, I am; in a communication class perspective. Throughout my week, I would write in my Interpersonal Communication Journal about all of the different types of conversations I came across. Not one conversation was the same. They were all about different topics. Each journal entry I would write, however, had all different aspects to them.…

It has only been three weeks and I have never had a class that has personally affected me as much as this one. This week’s reading, “The Social Construction of Unreality: A Case Study of a Family’s Attribution of Competence to a Severely Retarded Child” by Pollner and McDonald-Wilker, really made me question my entire life and the role that my family has had in my education. I am in my second year at UCLA with a full scholarship for tuition and very minimal loans. Granted I have had some ups and downs with my GPA, I have overall been managing my grades. As a student, you can say I have been quite successful.…

Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. Two significant learning points for me during this course was in module 3, using the I-language instead of you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…

Response Assignment 3 The self and our perception of others are thoughts that are constantly flowing through our minds subconsciously. Prior to reading the readings for the week, I did not realize the impact that our self-perception had on our daily lives and interactions. After recalling some of my instances, I realized that the interpretations that I have regarding my self-worth might not have been the most accurate. In this response, the two examples that I have chosen are events that either directly or indirectly relates to my days in high school.…

Self-Analysis Communication is a skill that I learned at an early age. When growing up, learning proper communication skills is a key to becoming a successful citizen. I have taken the time to go over my self-assessment tests and have had the opportunity for others to express their opinions about my skills. The self-evaluation test has brought to my attention that I have a “Driver” kind of communication style, a “high self monitor” score of 14, and a “compromising” type of management style. My goal is to slow down my speed of talking.…

Self reflection is the mental process that acquires knowledge and understanding through thoughts and experience which helps encourage self awareness. This essay focuses on assessing my objectives and how I have developed my skills from the beginning of this semester until now. At the start of semester A, I wasn’t confident in preparing for the skills sessions and workshops. I wasn 't always able to find the correct answers to the workshop questions set which made it relatively difficult for me to participate in lectures despite finding myself at the library every other day. I began by listening to knowledge based lectures online and making notes alongside the recommended reading given by my lecturers or the module guide.…
