The HIV/AIDS pandemic has become a major concern for the world, particularly Africa. While not all the children and adolescents in our program were HIV positive or had AIDS, they were most certainly affected by it. Part of my role involved supporting children and families with end-of-life issues, which included assisting with funeral preparations and providing grief counseling. Furthermore, I performed HIV/AIDS education including transmission methods and safer sex practices. This involved exploring social and behavioral changes needed to affect change, including discussions of local traditions and customs. My function was to provide options to customs, while keeping intact the cultural heritage and wisdom.
