The Police Officers that are on city streets serve a dual role, they are the first line of defense for citizens as well as the first encounter that people as their liberties are limited and they enter the criminal justice system. If police officers are more properly vetted, to ensure that they will be a part of the solution and not a further level of the problem they would gain more trust from the people they are sworn to serve. If they are able to more readily identify the mental stability of offenders this stands to mitigate further conflict between themselves and the person of…

I think that the first thing that needs to be done for Flint would be to bring back free Bottle water to the community because they still don't have clean water that is healthy for people to drink. I also think that Flint needs to change every lead pipe in the City to help make water safe again. I think that Flints Government needs to make a huge leap into making their community trust them again because they made a huge error that has affected a lot of people. Now the Government is saying that the water is safe to drink but the community still doesn't trust them because what they have done in the past with the water. I am from Rocky Mount, North Carolina and the largest issue I hope will change is the crime rate. For 2016, Neighborhood Scout ranked Rocky Mount seventeenth on their list of thirty cities with the highest murder rate, placing Rocky Mount higher than cities in New York and California. If the crime rate were to decrease in Rocky Mount, then more people would be willing to go out to stores and restaurants. If people felt safe, then stores would be likely to stay open and additional stores would open after the fact. In doing this, it would improve the possibility of an expansion in the size of the city.…

The film Park Avenue provides a glimpse of how the rich become richer and how their actions effect individuals in a lower socioeconomic class. On one side of Park Avenue it houses some of the richest people in the world while on the other side of Park Avenue so many families are struggling daily to find employment. The top 1% continue to gain wealth by buying/rigging elections in their favor, covering up environmental mishaps, and cutting necessary welfare programs. This is important to social workers because it makes it more difficult for us to find resources for our clients. As a whole the rich dictates what goes on in society and that is not fair.…

If I could change one thing in my community I would add a free, walk-in teen crisis center for adolescents and teenagers to help prevent pregnancy, suicide and self harm, and abusive relationships. The center would be completely anonymous and offer a hotline service for immediate assistance so no child or teenager has to worry about their friends or family knowing. The center would not only provide contraceptives, it would also provide education on reproduction and teach how to resist sexual coercion for both genders. As a result of our school system teaching an abstinence only curriculum, our health classes are unable to fully prepare its students on how to prevent pregnancy should they become sexually active.…

Finally, on a macro level approach, there should be a stricter policy about releasing 911 calls that are available to the public. During these calls, some people may have just witnessed something terrible and are distraught, then the recording is released to the public and it may re-traumatize a person; or, potentially the listeners that have access to the audio, they may even become traumatized. Within society, I feel there needs to be more acceptances to people who have been traumatized or experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder. I believe there should be more funding towards mental health and facilities to improve the wellness of those who need additional assistance.…
