Because of my mom’s strong work ethic, I came to the conclusion that the key to getting into college was hard work, and disregarding the negative stereotypes placed on young Latina women. So, I went to school determined to make the best of it, to make my family proud, but most importantly to make myself proud. My time in high school has been a period of intense focus and determination. Because of them, I want to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. Seeing my uncle intently examine cars and the process he undertakes to get to the source of the problem has always fascinated me. Likewise, the annual “equipment rodeo” at the company where my father works has given me a different perspective on mechanical engineering. At the “equipment rodeo” two years ago, I saw all of the different machines that help improve construction time, quality, and labor. They were more to me than just machines. They were a gift. This delicately designed and built piece of equipment meant that there is one less place where my father or other construction workers have to do physically exhausting work. It means one less strain on my father and it further reduced his possibility to develop back pain. Seeing what a machine can do to help thousands of lives inspires me.
