It was a summer Saturday in my cozy apartment in the Bronx. I was washing dishes when out of the corner of my eye I saw a roach running across my kitchen floor. I was terrified! Immediately, I ran out to the store and bought a tin of the most popular roach killer to arm myself for the next roach I see in my apartment. Many thoughts ran through my mind about what this dirty roach can do to me by running all over my things in the middle of the night. I did not have the nerve to swat and kill it so I was happy with my roach killer spray. I never gave a single thought to what the spray would do to me until my peer group in the Community/Public Health undergraduate course chose the “Harmful Effects of Chemicals in the Home” for our final research project. An article on endocrine disruptors from household chemicals and everyday articles in the home piqued my interest even further. I have experienced many chronic diseases and the efforts to manage these diseases. My primary goals for pursuing graduate studies are to increase my clinical knowledge and obtain advanced skills for working with different age groups and patient populations to prevent the onset of chronic diseases. In this academic pursuit, I will gain expert guidance from faculty for my research interest into endocrine disruptors across the lifespan.
