Personal Statement: Habesha Leadership

Being Ethiopian and having lived there before, I’ve always wanted to give back. Habesha Leadership, a club dedicated to bringing awareness and helping Ethiopian and Eritrean countries, gave me a platform to do so. Previous years, we have done book drives, and last year we even made and sold chapstick as a collaboration with GirlUp, an international organization that helps girls in underdeveloped parts of the world. This year, as the president, I wanted to take the community service aspect to the next level.
I had visited Ethiopia last summer and got in contact with an orphanage that helped kids go to school. I returned determined to make sponsoring one of these children a reality. It's a huge responsibility because each child requires $500 a year, and it’s a multi-year commitment, but I knew that it was achievable. To be able to drastically change someone’s life and give him/her the right to education is all what Habesha Leadership and I as an individual stand for.

I thought that it would be a great idea to turn our greatest asset into a way to raise money for a good cause. I planned an event with my peers, and this year we’re going to host a community event called “Culture Night” in the spring. Not only will Habesha Leadership perform, but we have gotten commitments from other cultural clubs from Asian expression, to African student Association, to Muslim Student Association. We’re gonna have dances, a fashion show, and food. All the proceeds will to our child that we are sponsoring. Being the head of this project has made me feel interconnected to my community and to the

Seated on the plane to Beijing, I was thinking all the way on what I did through the past year. My mind went back to the time when my friends and I worked together for Chinese orphans by creating a club. With 100 dollars from donation, I asked several classmates to help me set up a club called ‘Bring Me Hope Club’ to cooperate with a global NGO: Bring Me Hope, to raise money for Chinese orphans and build long-term personal one-to-one relationships with them.…

The book Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss, and Hope in an African Slum was assigned to the class, and after receiving the assignment I assumed it would just be another boring book that education is notorious for using in Composition classes. To my surprise, I was very intrigued by this book and what it had to offer. What Kennedy and Jessica’s story taught me most was about perseverance. The two made some great changes in the slums, but I believe that their perseverance was what lead them to all their success. Others may argue that it was Kennedy’s unconditional love for the community that lead him and Jessica to the ability to help so many.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

As president of my high school's Key Club, it is my job to organize service activities for our members to volunteer in. One of these activities is the local haunted house sponsored by the Front Royal Little League. This fundraiser for the little league started when Mr. Bryan Binnix stepped in to save it from plummeting. Mr. Binnix discovered that the program wasn't making enough profits until his brother, Mr. Bobby Binnix, wanted to make a change, thus they proposed the idea of having an annual haunted house. Since the first year in 2012, the fundraiser has raised approximately $9,500.00.…

Throughout high school, I have learned to overcome many challenges, yet I recognize that most of the time I cannot do it by myself. At the start of the school year my NHS advisor stated that she wanted me to direct some sort of relief fundraiser, given that Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico were all devastated by hurricanes. As president, I was eager to make it happen because I, along with a few other members of my NHS, have family in all three locations. However, the main challenge was not getting approval from administration, but rather creating a fundraiser where students would actually donate. Most fundraisers done by previous NHS groups had failed.…

My Personal Goal Statement Every day I wake up, I ask myself how I can make a difference. This question has helped shape my personal values and principles and directed my path into the nursing field. Growing up in West Africa and witnessing firsthand the sufferings and impoverishment of the people around me, I developed a sense of compassion and willingness to make a difference and help alleviate their sufferings and put a smile on their faces. Healthcare delivery and poverty are two major underlying factors in the challenges faced in Africa, thus, when I got an opportunity to come into the United States, it was my golden ticket to finally give back to the community and make a difference. This led me into the nursing field; I started out as a Certified Nurse Assistant.…

More than one billion children in the world are deprived of at least one of the basic necessities. According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) "children living in poverty are those who experience deprivation of the material, spiritual and emotional resources needed to survive, develop and thrive, leaving them unable to enjoy their rights, achieve their full potential or participate as full and equal members of society". Poverty limits children's opportunities for education, puts them at risk for health problems and increases the likelihood that they’ll be subjected to child labor or early marriage. Poor children are hungry and at risk for malnutrition, underdevelopment and stunting, which can have serious health consequences later…

My Personal Leadership Philosophy and How it has Developed As a leader I am very unique. I hold strong personal values in the areas of trust, respect, and responsibility. I believe that no one person should be responsible for someone else, but that we have to grow up and learn to take care of ourselves. Prior to this course, I perceived leaders as people who told a group of people what to do in order to accomplish a task. When I was put in a leadership position I was always effective, but I never really took the thoughts or feelings of others into consideration.…
