Good Country People Short Story

Although, “good country people,” are supposed to be those who do what is right over what is wrong, I, Manley Pointer, am no ordinary country person. I travel from town to town changing my name to convince people that I am one charming young man, only to con them out of what I want. I understand pretending to sell Bibles is wrong, but it is the right employment for me and I do a heck of a job at it. The people I do convince to buy from me are great people, just the belongings I want from them are even better. I am a very materialistic guy, so the nicer the products the family owns, the more attracted I am to them.
I had been around town and came across the farm house with a name on the mailbox that read, “Cedar,” thinking this was the name of the home owner. As I came up to the

After kissing for a little while longer I told her, “Show me where your wooden leg joins on.”
Almost immediately, she responded back, “No!”
I then knew exactly what I needed to do, I was going to make her think that since I loved her and she could not do this simple task for me that she did not love me. The second I made this clear, her leg came right off in guilt and I would finally be able to get it away from her and keep this treasure for myself. Once I took it away from her and set it in a spot that she could reach for it she began frantically screeching, “Give me my leg.”
Knowing that I was about part ways from her with her leg I gladly told her, “I’ve gotten a lot of interesting things. And you needn’t to think you’ll catch me because Pointer ain’t really my name.”
As I disappeared away from the town I thought to myself what an idiot she was for believing I loved her when in reality all I loved was her wooden
