Personal Statement For Purpose For A Career In Medicine

“Whenever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity”. These few words by Hippocrates will forever resonate in my thoughts. My journey since childhood has been guided with the solid belief that a blessed life comes from serving others. I feel a moral and instinctive obligation to help humans with physical or emotional ailments. Caring for patients is not only rewarding, but the hope is that one day, these people will contribute to “the love of humanity” by giving back in the same way that I wish to do in medicine. Thus, my decision was rather easy; my passion to serve humanity prompted me to pursue a career in medicine. The medical education and training I received at the University of Al-Mustansiriya between 2003 and 2009 can only be described as difficult. These experiences did not only fulfilled my passion to serve humanity but also reinforced the integrative skills exercised daily by a medical team: working as a team member and at times as a team leader; cooperating with people of all backgrounds; performing under pressure; organizing and implementing specific plans while maintaining flexibility and adaptability. All of my clinical experiences have strengthened me and shaped the person and physician I am today. For the past three years, I have been involved in Research Internship Program at Emory University. Working as part of a very productive team, I feel that every day offers me countless opportunities for academic and personal growth. I have come to appreciate not only the intellectual stimulation but also the deeper understanding of human nature that clinical research generously
