I came to the U.S 6 years ago with hopes and dreams of a better education. As a first-generation student, with parents who don’t understand English very well, I’ve been on my own to succeed academically. The biggest obstacles that I have encountered were the language and cultural barriers. When I first came, I was able to speak English at a basic level. My reading ability was poor and I could hardly understand academic vocabulary. At the same time, I also experienced a tremendous culture-shock. I had problem socializing with my peers and understanding life here. My first year of being in the U.S. consisted of two objectives: to learn English and the American culture. Thankfully in high school, I was lucky enough to be able to find the most supportive environment. I was part of the AVID program at my school as well as participating in my school’s College Ambassadors program.

Due to my family circumstance, I’m determined to finish school as early as possible in order to save my parents money; I’ll be taking 24 units next quarter and will maintain, if not quicken, my academic progress. My injury, despite its negative effects, has sparked an inspiration for me to pursue Mechanical Engineering. I want to incorporate this field with my background in health to research devices that could help people cope with chronic injury and enhance their physical ability. By the end of January, I will become a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sport Medicine program and will continue to further my education in the field of health. This provides a concrete background for me as I’m getting hands-on experience with individuals who face injuries similar to mine. Therefore, studying Mechanical Engineering at UCSB is the next step to provide a fundamental, second to none education that I can utilize to achieve my
