I Want To Be An Art Teacher

On September 8, 2009 I stood in front of a class of 24 excited sixth graders and in a moment 's time it was as if everything I had learned in the four years of college prior to that instant suddenly escaped my mind. Today, with 6 years of teaching behind me I am now beginning to feel as though I am getting an understanding of what it means to be an art teacher and how much more I still have to learn about education as a whole. Educators have the unique opportunity of a new beginning and an ending every school in which we are able to review our work and assess our strengths and weaknesses as teachers. As time goes by it has become clear to me and my peers that I possess a gift to reach young learners, create an inviting learning atmosphere and work to challenge myself to always be better than I was yesterday. Working towards a Master 's of Art Education will be a stepping stone on the path of a gifted educator. It is my intention to continue my education after my graduate studies and obtain a Doctorate in Art Education in order to teach new and upcoming art educators. It is my belief that the knowledge and experience I have gained during my career as an art educator will be at it 's maximum use if utilized to mold tomorrows art teachers. I consider myself fortunate for having found something in this life that I can be passionate about and able to make a career out of it. I am determined to continue to increase my knowledge base and skill set as an art educator and the decision to attend the master 's program at the University of Nebraska Kearney is necessary for the progression of my professional life, a advancement that will one day guide me towards reaching a broader student audience through the education of the next generation of art educators. In the words of the author and spiritual teacher Marianne Williamson, “...playing small does not serve the world...We are all meant to shine, as children do.” Pursuing this path of higher learning will aid me is serving the world at my greatest capacity, sharing a gift that was once shared with me by another.
