I did not want a project that would only last for a short amount of time, I wanted something that would last and leave an impact on others. With this thought process in mind, I also wanted to give back to a community that helped me become the person I am today. One of my most meaningful service experiences was my Eagle Scout project. One of the requirements for obtaining the rank of Eagle is that the Scout must complete a service project that benefits the community; my project was to fundraise, organize, and oversee construction of a new pavilion at the Fowler Center for Outdoor Learning, a special needs camp, near Mayville, MI. The Fowler Center is a non-profit organization and a year round camp for kids with special needs. One of their programs, Outpost, is a 2-week camping experience that’s mainly geared toward campers with autism. The Fowler Center was in need of a new pavilion at their campsite for the campers to utilize for activities such as meals and games.…

Boy Scouts was initially something that I never truly expected to enter my life. The most exposure I had of it was cartoonish representations that I would see in the funnies section of the newspaper or spoofs of the organization in my daily cartoons. This all changed when my friend one day invited me over to one of the weekly meetings. I was a little scared at first, a group of people I didn’t know was frightening to my middle school self. But for some reason; I’m not sure now if it was the friendly scouts, or the exuberant leaders, I decided to join.…
