Why I Chose To Study Social Work

When you have someone special close to you is born with a disability where their first few years of life revolves around nothing but doctor visits, appointments for surgeries and extensive therapies your life as a child can be affected dramatically. One can find inspiration even in the darkest of times for example I got inspired to study about this profession because of my older brother whom was born premature and was born with cerebral palsy. In my opinion growing up with him I never saw him as being different I never saw him as a disabled I saw him as my brother and as a person whom I would spend Saturday morning playing video games and watching cartoons. I wanted to learn about them I wanted to see what kind of help was out there for people who were in need I wanted to know what kind of help would be out there for when my brother would get older. I wanted to help people the same way that social workers would help my family and my brother. The problem was that I never knew who to ask for more information about the study of social work. It wasn’t until I entered high school when I finally received my first peek of the study of social work. It was in my child development class where we had a special guest speaker talk about her job as a social worker. However it the way she described it that made me sway away from the thought of becoming one. She made the job sound more like a chore and less of a passion and to top it off she made it sound like a horrible paying job, and that eventually lead me becoming disinterested in the study. This made me want to pursue other alternatives such as rehab services, psychology, and even
