Physical Therapy Personal Statement

I was 38 years old when I was suddenly struck with the realization that my status as a stay-at-home mom had transformed. Each day my two children were becoming more independent in their flights from the “nest” as they boarded the bus and headed off to intermediate school. I was astonished to realize the extent to which my children’s needs had changed on the home front. On the other hand, the family pets appeared to be very adept at taking advantage of this new opportunity to have me at their beck and call for the day. I recognized my need to help others so I responded to a help wanted ad for a physical therapy aide which turned out to be the first leg of my journey into the world of health care and a rewarding career of helping others. While working as a physical therapy aide, I developed a growing curiosity regarding biology, anatomy, physiology and how these sciences could be used in conjunction with other modalities to help people. I graduated in 2010 with my Associate of Applied Science degree in Physical Therapy Assistance. While working as a PTA, I gained valuable experience practicing in a variety of health care settings, collaborating with other health care providers, and caring for a diverse patient population. During this time, I experienced another epiphany when I became aware of my vocation for working with geriatric patients. As my interest in this specialization increased, I discovered that resources to help the rising geriatric population in my community and in surrounding rural environments were extremely limited, and despite my desire to do more to help, I was not certain how to address these
