Exposure to WSU

As a kid who grew up in the suburbs of Detroit I was never exposed to the city of Detroit very often. Now I've been to for multiple events Detroit. I have been to various sporting events, concerts, car shows, art fairs, museums, family dinners and so on... So I’m not oblivious to what is happening in Detroit, but, I have never been to the Wayne State Campus and its surroundings. My first true experience of the Wayne State campus wasn't an official tour conducted by the school, it was a concert. My friend Liam and I bought tickets to see Thundercat at the Magic Stick on Woodward Ave. I had no idea that was on the Wayne State campus, all I knew was that it was on Woodward Ave so I didn't question anything.

I was slowly starting to fall in love with the atmosphere of the campus. Wayne State has such a unique atmosphere because you have a major city and a major university all in one. Just walking around the campus and see others walk around gave me a very different perspective then I was used to living in the suburb of Novi. In Novi I wasn't exposed to the amazing diversity of Wayne State's campus! Seeing all different kinds of personalities, clothing styles, and smiles made me feel like I would be accepted as soon as I started the fall semester. After walking around for a hour or so my friend and I finally started making our way to the Magic Stick on Woodward Ave. Walking down Woodward I felt completely safe and had no worries of anything bad happening. I know know of this park of town as Midtown. Before this simple yet important walk I had no idea Wayne State was in the heart of Midtown. Now that I was acquainted and saw all the cool places you could go to made me want to Wayne State even more. Although this isn't the most conventional first impression of Wayne State it was mine. Being able to see campus life without formally seeing it with a guide really allowed me to make up my own opinion about the campus and the surroundings. After taking this impromptu tour of the campus just further proved that I make the correct decision on committing to Wayne State

What draws me to Bates is it’s name. To be blunt, I would have never known about the institution. Not because I didn’t want to, but because no one around me ever mentioned it. Around the same time I started taking an interest to academics I was watching various shows, one being “Bates Motel”. Coincidentally the following month my counselor put up a poster with just the name of the college “Bates”.…

Slowly and much to my surprise, things started to get better. By day six, I was an expert on navigating through the city. Each day on my walk back to Penn Station, I would take a new route, marveling at New York City’s array of tourists and commuters. After two months, I'm able to brag that I know exactly how many Starbucks cafes there are between 34th and 43rd streets and that Fifth Avenue hosts the best clothing shops.…

I am a first-generation Latina student at The Ohio State University. Being from inner city Toledo, Ohio, I attended a public district where 80% of students received free or reduced lunch and the graduation rate was at an all time low of 49%. My parents had not graduated high school, therefore once college applications became relevant, they unfortunately could not help me. Through 25 different scholarships, I was able to attend OSU without any loans and truly believed I was on the right track to achieving the "American Dream". To my dismay, once classes began, I was lost.…

Going to college, especially for a first year student, can be stressful from adjusting to course loads to reorganizing their daily schedules to make time for work and studying. In addition, the majority of students also live in a dorm which also adds to adjusting to college life. However, for some students, they have to also adjust to living in a new city or town that they are unfamiliar with. Resonating with what many first year college students go through, I found that participating in the Buffalo River boat tour helped me to become more acquainted with the city of Buffalo and its surrounding areas. Furthermore, the added commentary of the history of Buffalo throughout the duration of the tour enriched and supplemented what I was visually…

I learned when I was 12 it’s 3.4 miles between my house and Ryan Field. If I zig-zag through the tree-lined side streets instead, it bumps the distance up to a little over 4 miles, but the extra minutes of biking are a small price to pay to avoid the busy Sheridan Road. It’s this familiarity with Northwestern which sent me east to Lafayette last summer for something new, and, now after realizing how much I miss my hometown campus, brings me back. Football and basketball games were the initial draw to NU, but once I began high school I pushed to be involved on campus in an academic fashion as well.…
