Application Essay: A Career As A Physician

As far as I can remember, I have always found satisfaction and reward in making others happy. Knowing that I can make a positive difference in someone’s day, no matter how small, is something that contributes to the understanding of my purpose in life. This became the foundation for realizing my passion for medicine, and ultimately podiatry. However, my choice to study podiatric medicine is not a career that I had a passion for since a young age. Rather, it is something that had to be cultivated over time through exploration and experience. Early on in college, I had figured out that certain aspects of a career as a physician were in line with my goals. A physician was able to interact and develop personal relationships with people on a daily basis, tending to their needs in order to make them happier. Doing so while being able to work independently, in addition to combining the science of the human body, is an idea that fascinated and attracted me to medicine. The possibility of including aspects of radiology, dermatology, biomechanics, surgery and more into a career that can deal with virtually anything from sports to trauma, is something that became incredibly appealing to me. Being an expert on a specific subject of medicine while still being responsible for the treatment of the whole patient is an idea that drew me to the profession as well. After seeking firsthand exposure to podiatry by shadowing the physicians of the Foot and Ankle Surgeons of New York group, I was truly able to engage with the doctors, as they were enthusiastic about teaching me and interested in the cases that they were encountering.
