My Ecstasy: A Short Story

Improved Essays
It was a cool Thursday evening and I had just come home from school and finished my homework. All of a sudden, “…whoosh, clang, shhhh…” were all sounds coming from my family as I was just starting to relax from a hard day’s work. “Hey Ryan I have to bring Cay (my younger sister) to gymnastics, so if you need help then ask me now.” Stated my mother as she ran into a sliding stop at the laundry room to throw on another load of dirty laundry. “Nope, I am all good today but thanks for asking!” I exclaimed while I searched the TV for “ESPN network’s not top 10 plays”. My father then raced down the stairs and sprinted to his computer to squeeze another 10 minutes of work in. I then realized I should help out and see if everything is okay. “Are …show more content…
“One minute mom! I will be down in a minute.”
“Okay just make sure that you have your grip bag (a bag containing her “grips” to avoid blisters on the bars), and your snack!”
My dad then interjects with a quick “And don’t forget your water!” and then returns back to his vicious cycle of running to the sink to finish some more dishes and then to the laundry room to throw on another load of laundry. The lavender dishwasher fluid could be distinguished from here.
“Clunk, clunk, clunk…” I heard my sisters feet slam against the floor to find her things for gymnastics before it was time to leave.
My mother then darted vigorously over to the stove to put dinner on the burner. A loud “Swoop, clang, swish…” filled the already diligent air.
My dad then shouted over the loud noises in the room “Hey Ryan can you turn down the TV, I’m trying to listen to a video and can’t

A silence stretches long between us. Layna dabs at her eyes with the sleeve of her thin sweater, then reaches down and grasps my red-tipped fingers as we approach our mother’s house. Without a word, we step up onto the porch stairs that rasp in complaint, and I hold my breath, waiting for the curtains to swish, and the glimpse of Mom’s beaming face before she bustled towards the front door in her excitement to see us, throwing open the door to smother us in hugs, all wrinkled skin and senior sweat, and the scent of home.…

The concept of being a mystic has been around for centuries. That is, “a person who claims to attain, or believes in the possibility of attaining insight into mysteries transcending ordinary human knowledge, as by direct communication with the divine or immediate intuition in a state of spiritual ecstasy” (Dictionary). This idea of mysticism is expressed in the novel Mariette in Ecstasy by Ron Hansen. While reading this novel, readers are forced to contemplate the question: is Mariette a fake or a real mystic? It can be decided that Mariette is in fact, a legit mystic due to the stigmata she experiences, the ecstasy she is overcome with, and the ever-growing relationship she has with God.…

Personal Narrative rough draft : Car accident It was early in April of 2016, sunny and beautiful, the day was sure to be full of excitement and energy as student council speeches are due and the final trimester of the year was slowly coming to an end. I woke up that morning to my mother blissfully waking me up with my light turning on and her sweet beautiful voice saying “Wake up, Joey,” I slowly rolled out of bed and stumbled into the shower trying hopelessly to escape the morning and the horrible sensations of waking up early on a Wednesday. As the warm water rushed over me I rehearsed in my head how I would present my student council speech to my teacher. Little did I know how different it would actually be that day.…

Saturday morning came around again, and I had lots of plans and homework to do. With a big paper I didn't want to write, a hockey game I couldn’t wait to play in, and a family gathering later that night, all of the things I had to do piled up. I hung around my house after waking up, watching “America's Next Top Model” and making pancakes for breakfast, not too worried about the obligations I had. Two hours came and went and I headed out to my hockey game. I piled up the car with my gear and drove to Nobles to meet the team and play our last game.…

My fingernails dig into the slack bark of the substantial sized log beneath us, plucking off the pieces of wood that were pliant enough to tumble off. I can vividly hear the mellifluous hum his throat is creating, along with the inhale and exhale of breath he takes next to me, the two sound mixing with the babbling rivulet not too far in front of us. An overwhelming sensation of a sort of serenity washes over me, like his breathing and the rushing water in front of us were entering me into an out of body trance. The tranquility of this entire setting was something I haven’t felt in quite some time, and I was grateful he thought to take me out here.…
