Personal Statement Dentistry

The ability to smile is one of the first traits we acquire. Unfortunately, my mum lost her smile due to her constant never ending dental problems. It was only when she had a bridge fixed and multiple fillings that she regained her confidence in speaking and smiling. Observing this made me appreciate that a dentist can have a life transforming effect on a person’s life. When searching for a career, dentistry was a clear decision as it is a career which uses practical science while offering the chance to work with people and care for them throughout their lifetime. My desire to study dentistry was further enhanced during a two weeks work placement at Croft Dental Care where I witnessed a wide range of treatments. I admired the teamwork between the dentist and the nurse as they worked in sync with great care whilst maintaining communication with the patient. Having gone through some of the struggles myself, I currently volunteer at a local organisation to teach KS2 students maths. Not only does it feel rewarding giving back to the community and providing students with greater opportunities, it has further enhanced my communication and management skills. I have adapted my teaching style and method of communication to suit each student’s needs. Furthermore, I support a group of year sevens at my school to monitor and track their progress with reading. Monitoring and charting a patient’s teeth is extremely essential for a dentist for reference and comparison between visits. Similar to this, I identify words my group have struggled with and check their understanding in the next session. Volunteering has improved my ability to remain focussed, learn new skills and appreciate working with children. I believe these skills have prepared me to become a dentist and in the future I wish to specialise into paediatric
