Personal Statement: Culinary Arts Class

Decent Essays
I've never really experienced having to work together alongside people that I didn't usually talk to, therefore when I started my Culinary Arts class it was an unusual feeling to do so. Every time we would cook something we would have different groups and every time we had to divide the jobs between the group. Occasionally I would have to be the leader and other times I had to listen to another person. At first, I would refuse to go along with my group and just do my own thing, but later on, I realized its best to listen to your group so things could work properly. Basically that no matter what position I am in I should always try to work together with the people I'm working with. I also learned that there is always a way to respectively express

In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

Three important skills that are needed when working in groups are cooperation, and leadership. When I am around a small group, I have no fear in discussing with every member, compared to when I am in a larger group where I have issues speaking with everyone. In smaller groups, it is easier for me to pay attention to everyone’s idea. My ability to pay attention have helped me become a better listener, respond to other group members ideas with full understanding. To be involved in a small group, members of that group must have the ability to cooperate.…

The North Dakota Association of Honor Society has four criteria that all members should possess and applicants must meet all four to be inducted: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Since I have been given the opportunity to fill out the application for the Honor Society and write this essay, I clearly have demonstrated skill in the Scholarship area. However, that still leaves three other areas. First is the area of Leadership. I have been entrusted by my peers to serve in various leadership positions both in the school and through other activities that I am involved with, which range from Class President to serving as a member of the school's Peer Leader Team.…

Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint though, was both difficult and interesting for the reasons of being assigned group members not of my own choosing, learning to listen to others ideas which can help me to learn something new, and using former knowledge while working together to create a clean, in depth, and well prepared presentation. With working in groups of students whom I have known since I was young but…

Collaboration can be extremely fruitful when the environment is flexible, open-minded, constructive, and the team has clear goals. Working on a team involved identifying roles for each member based upon our strengths. Reflection Paper II Throughout my college experience here in the Carroll School of Management, group work and the ability to work well with others has been emphasized greatly. This makes sense, because in a professional environment, the ability to communicate, listen and contribute within a group leads to success and the achievement of goals. However, none have gone on as long as this project, making it a more realistic example of working on a team. Junior year of college is definitely a crazy time, as we are forced to balance heavy workloads with extracurriculars and recruiting.…
