Community Service

Throughout my high school years, I dedicated time to community service, during the summers of 2015, 2016, and 2017 I served as a volunteer at a Summer Camp named, The Cool Summer Experience, that was provided by my church, First Baptist Church of Waukegan. It was similar to summer school, It was from Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 4 pm. I was a camp leader, and as a leader I was in charge of an age group, it was my responsibility to make sure the kids were taken care of, that they were on task, that I was available to them when they needed me. The Cool Summer Experience is a faith- based camp that is focusing on the well being of the mind, and body. CSE is also a nature based camp where children learn to plant, take

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

On the first day of my 4th period Pre-AP Social Science class, my teacher announced that she would be nominating 2 students for a scholarship based on their academic performance and service to the community. For an 8th grader, this seemed to be the most exciting opportunity I had ever heard of. It would allow some separation from my ultracompetitive classmates at one of the top middle schools in California. Even though history was not my forte, I devised a regimen that I would follow. I studied everyday afterschool, spent hours upon hours on projects, and never turned in an assignment without checking it over 3 times.…

From the array of experiences that has shaped the person I am, one index, in particular, will forever be cached in my memory. That memory is the feeling of building my first computer program "Caesar Cipher" in my first computer science class. Before I took my first college class, I built Honda engines and worked on cars. But computer science showed me I could do much more than use a Phillips screwdriver or an impact wrench - it taught me how to become a leader and that, with hard work, I can create something amazing. I am applying to the CSE program at UW Bothell because I want to keep creating amazing software and other applications and reach my goal of becoming a Software Developer.…
