Finally, senior year of high school, I was elected captain of the all-girl and co-ed cheer team. The title captain is only a great name when the person behind the title shows great leadership qualities. As a sophomore, I had to opportunity to get lots of playing time in varsity games and being a young player on the team, getting big playing time, I felt I had to take the leadership role in my sophomore class. Now that I am a senior on the team, I feel more of that weight on my shoulders. Being on the court most of the time, I feel it’s part of my duty, on and off the court, to be a leader for the girls. Keeping them serious in practice to just being someone they look up to when they need guidance, I feel those situations is what really taught me the leadership qualities. From the start of my four year commitment to football and marching band I saw leadership all around me. My first summer of football my freshman year the seniors were prime examples of leadership. They were right there to correct form on our lifts, blocks, and set the overall example of what it meant to be a Mead football player. Later that summer I threw in marching band camp to my agenda. The drum major, my sister, lead the band with kept the entire band in order, and worked with us until our sets were flawless.…

It all started after my first cheer practice. The cheer team was laying around on the freezing, uncomfortable floor in coach Cook’s classroom waiting for the longest cheer parent meeting to be over, when one of the girls say,”Instead of sitting here bored out of our minds, let’s play a game!” One girl comments,”Let’s play HIde and Seek around the school!” All of the cheerleaders agreed, and someone started counting and we all started running through the cold, creepy hallways. My friend and I ran to the girls, smelly bathroom, all I could feel was my friend breathing on my neck.…

I would never listen to my coach when he would tell me that I needed to stop or that I needed to change the way I would tumble. He would try to teach me the correct way, and I would just brush it off because I thought that I knew everything about tumbling. But of course, I didn’t. I was working on my fulls and my coach kept telling me to use my hips to spin.…

This year I was captain along with another Senior. We have been given more responsibilities this year than the captains have been given in the past. We were put in charge of making the relays for the relay meet, designing the t-shirts for the team, and choosing our teams for the Homecoming Relays. This responsibility meant that we had to put aside our wants and needs, to put the team before ourselves. One of the important lessons that leadership teaches is putting the team before the individual.…
