Amnesty International is my first choice for internship placement because the organization directly aligns with my belief that there must be a global effort in fighting injustice and promoting human rights. As a future Human Rights attorney, it would be an honor to contribute my skills to an organization that understand the importance of protecting intersectional identities and ensuring humanity is safeguarded. As the Howard University National Association for the Advancement of Colored People President, I campaigned and advocated for voting rights and political literacy particularly for students and underprivileged communities in the surrounding area. This was done through voter registration drives, workshops, community gatherings etc. I also focused on women’s rights as it relates to bringing awareness to sexual assault on college campus through programs such as Take Back The Night which encouraged students to take a pledge to never be bystanders when sexual …show more content…
I understood the inclination for youth to get involved with crime when there were no other viable outlets to express themselves so I helped establish a partnership between a local church and police department to create an afterschool program for youth. This background along with my involvement with mentorship programs on my university campus such as the Freshman Leadership Academy has given me the opportunity to equip youth with some of the tools they may need to become their greatest selves. An internship at Youth People For would allow me to continue this type of advocacy. As previously stated, in my personal statement, I implemented a mentorship program between dc youth and Howard University students during my tenure as my university’s NAACP President.
