Every summer break I would go to my cousin Tobi’s house on Burke Avenue with a few of my older cousins, but could only go after my mother approved of my final report card. Usually, she would make me call her and inform her of my results, but this time she drove up to my junior-high school, a joint elementary and junior high school, I had attended since kindergarten. Along with this experience, language ideology, and how it affects the school system. I learned that our language is a product of our experiences, but I want to learn how to break the barriers that it creates in the classroom in addition to any other forms of inequality; to better serve schools which have been underserved. I want to learn this from professors, like Carolyn J. Riehl, who believe in the reformation of schools in communities that have been poorly served. I know that it is my duty to serve and furthering my education with an Ed.M in Sociology and Education, will allow me to do so in the cause that I have deemed most worthy. The bell rang and the second quarter of my Kindergarten year at William Cullen Bryant Elementary ended. I grabbed my report card as I ran out into the light snow and spotted my mother's white 1997 Caravan by the stop sign, as usual. An enormous smile covers my face as I hop into the car, eager to show her I had prioritized my academics before sports, as she had asked me to. As soon as I was settled in, I handed her the envelope containing my pride. Proud of what I had accomplished, but to my dismay she gave me the “I’m disappointed look” and said, “Cullen”, her voice rising, “Why are there not one, but two threes on this report card?”…

In theory, equality can be easily perceived as a rudimentary ideal. It is not complicated to imagine an equitable comparison in many aspects, especially when locating the correlation between human beings of the same global population. Yet, equality has failed to be translated suitably in practice. As the we progress further into 2018, the United States is still battling to implement the egalitarianism that was declared in a document ratified over two centuries ago. There are still uneven balances in the workforce, unequal treatment in schools, racial injustices plague our judicial system and so forth.…

Growing up a black male, living with my single mother and sister in an environment where higher education is non-existing. The one thing that has affected me the most is going through half my life without my father. Not having someone to look up too as man or male role model was hard.…

My ideal philosophy for education My philosophy regarding Education is that it creates possibilities, opportunities and freedom. In my view, education is the epitome of life. At its heart, getting educated means getting to be empowered to embrace future exercises in life: meeting new people, making connections, taking joy in specific sorts of experience, planning activities and having the capacity to finish them effectively. The ancient refinement between 'opportunity from' and 'opportunity to' helps in understanding this sense of education (Freire, 2000).…
