Personal Statement: AP Calculus

I love math. I know this is not a common sentiment or a statement one often hears, but it is how I feel. Math has been my favorite academic subject since elementary school. Wanting to improve and sharpen my math skills, I have been enrolled in a math tutoring facility called Mathnasium since the seventh grade. After going for a few years now, I have realized how much I enjoy learning new math concepts and dive into whatever challenges the next level holds. My tutors have always been encouraged me throughout my time at Mathnasium. Now, I know I am not perfect at math, but I do learn from my mistakes quickly. In my junior year, I took AP Calculus AB, and it challenged me to work harder and study even more. My Calculus teacher is one of the most

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

My interest in physics was initially ignited during my sophomore year. I signed up for AP Physics 1, taught by a teacher in his first year, right out of college. His main goal was to encourage students to apply physics to the world around them and identify the relevancy of the course material. I was immediately hooked and I bought book after book about Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the Big Bang, and quantum mechanics. I was eager to learn as much as I could; in doing so, I realized that working in a laboratory setting, conducting experiments and applying equations, is something that I am truly passionate about.…

Education has always been a part of my life. Long before my first day of kindergarten, my family’s love of learning has heavily influenced me. My maternal grandfather told me stories of people in places long ago with the same excitement and joy when I was five as he did when I was fifteen. I savor every moment I spend in my Uncle’s living room, their cozy furniture and reading lamps a mere practicality, while the books lining every shelf stole the spotlight. At nearly every stage in my elementary schooling, my mom inspired me to persevere and fought alongside me.…

As a teacher, my belief is that students be taught the importance of mathematics in the daily life. I also stand firm that students should also be taught important life lessons that relate to how to succeed and prepare for the future. I think that it is inevitable that students be taught basic curriculum in mathematics. I agree that concepts of Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics be taught but I also think that students should be taught mathematics that deals with finances earlier then the college level. Everyone I let know says I am crazy for going into Math education.…
