Passing: Not Quite Fitting In In modern day racial passing has become almost irrelevant, with more than in any time in history, African Americans are having (near) equal rights, and it might not be too far-fetched to say that passing might be swapping. My interest in physics was initially ignited during my sophomore year. I signed up for AP Physics 1, taught by a teacher in his first year, right out of college. His main goal was to encourage students to apply physics to the world around them and identify the relevancy of the course material. I was immediately hooked and I bought book after book about Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the Big Bang, and quantum mechanics. I was eager to learn as much as I could; in doing so, I realized that working in a laboratory setting, conducting experiments and applying equations, is something that I am truly passionate about.…

On the first day of my 4th period Pre-AP Social Science class, my teacher announced that she would be nominating 2 students for a scholarship based on their academic performance and service to the community. For an 8th grader, this seemed to be the most exciting opportunity I had ever heard of. It would allow some separation from my ultracompetitive classmates at one of the top middle schools in California. Even though history was not my forte, I devised a regimen that I would follow. I studied everyday afterschool, spent hours upon hours on projects, and never turned in an assignment without checking it over 3 times.…

I studied brain and behaviour during my first year of clinical medicine, and found that I was particularly intrigued by neuroscience. Throughout my year at Barts and the London, I thought a lot about whether the course was right for me, and began considering other options. I struggled to feel passionate about the course and my future as a doctor, but decided to complete the year to confirm my feeling that a career in medicine was not right for me. During this year, however, I developed a particular interest in the study of the brain, brain development and human behaviour. These lectures became the highlight of the year, and made me really keen to learn more about the subject.…
