I belong to a community based on hard work and kindness. At the end of my freshmen year of high school, I began volunteering at Habitat for Humanity. The staff greeted me with warmth and made me feel like a true member of the team. They immediately assigned me several tasks, which included sorting nails and sweeping. The next school year and summer I returned to volunteer. I returned because I simply enjoyed helping people and it even relieved some stress. There were countless items I had to clean and many donations I had to accept. I also became great friends with

I come from a Turkish community where most of my friends are Turkish native speakers. Since they all came to the United States after graduating from high school, they’re not very fluent in English. They always come to me for help when writing their essays or when they do not understand their assignments. I think one of the most impactful “one-on-one” tutoring experiences I had was when I had to revise and tutor my friend on writing her personal essay for her college application. She didn’t have to write a personal statement when she started at Bergen Community College…

My Personal Goal Statement Every day I wake up, I ask myself how I can make a difference. This question has helped shape my personal values and principles and directed my path into the nursing field. Growing up in West Africa and witnessing firsthand the sufferings and impoverishment of the people around me, I developed a sense of compassion and willingness to make a difference and help alleviate their sufferings and put a smile on their faces. Healthcare delivery and poverty are two major underlying factors in the challenges faced in Africa, thus, when I got an opportunity to come into the United States, it was my golden ticket to finally give back to the community and make a difference. This led me into the nursing field; I started out as a Certified Nurse Assistant.…

Growing up in a small town and coming from a school of under 600 students allowed me to comprehend the importance of community. Volunteering is a big part of my community. I started my volunteer experience at a very young age, working at the monthly town breakfast and yearly summer festival. This provided me with a love of serving and helping others less fortunate. I continue to support the community through working with the Special Olympics, and various service clubs at my school.…

A prominent issue that keeps me up at night is thinking about the amount of privilege certain children of the world have and the severe lack of resources and necessities for other children. This issue has become a concern for me ever since I visited Shepherd’s Field Children Village. Shepherd’s Field Children Village is an orphanage in China where they take in children born with disabilities and give them necessary surgeries and a home until they are adopted. It was started by an American couple in memory of their friend whose dream it was to start such a place. When I visited the orphanage, I was shocked at how happy the kids were despite their disabilities.…

During my first semester of Introduction to Sociology 1000, we were assigned to do community service for Otterbein University. Otterbein focuses on giving back and having students give back to the community as well. For the past ten weeks, I did my community service at the Promise House, it is located on the first-floor common apartments next to Devore Hall. While walking into the Promise House there is a room of tables for people to sit at, and then there is another room behind it which is the pantry of food for students in need. The organizations mission and goals were to be a resource center.…

I don't want to be one of the staff members that everyone hates and I'd like to be a rolemodel for other players, therefore, please give me any ideas / tips on how I can improve. Also I'd like everyone to know that although how I may have looked in the past, I'd like to let you all know that I'd like to be able to think that I can change into the old, rolemodel, that people used to see me as, not as cancer of the community.
