Why I Chose To Pursue A Career Path

As an incoming freshman in 2014, I did not have the slightest idea about what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I struggled with finding something that I found an interest in pursuing. Throughout my first and second semester, I went back and forth between a sociology major or a major in allied health technologies. All I knew was that I wanted to spend my life making an impact on others’ lives. Although I am still enrolled as an undeclared major, I have chosen to pursue a career path in sociology, particularly with social work, children and young adults. My plans for after graduation are to help people that are going through the same things that I did. All of them included drugs and alcohol. When I was just fifteen years old, my mother got engaged. Her fiancee, along with his youngest son, moved into our house. At first, everything seemed okay. A few months in and I began to realize what was going on. My step brother, who was just two years older than me, was addicted to drugs and alcohol. I would find him intoxicated, passed out, even facing death on multiple occasions. Each encounter I had, the situation kept getting worse. I cannot say how many times he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, or how many times he over dosed; all I can say is that it was one of the scariest things I have ever had to see. With much convincing and support, he decided to admit himself into rehab. Unfortunately, rehab does not help everyone, and many people go back to their old ways. In my step brothers case, he did just that. My mother and her fiancee eventually decided to go their separate ways, and as of today, I do not know what has happened to my step brother. To this day, there is still an unsettling feeling within me knowing that I could not do anything to help him. All I can do is hope that he finds the right
